Course Outline Assignment

Course Analysis
Course Name: Introduction to Photography
Course Length: 10 Weeks
Course Type: Online

Average Student:

Incoming/freshman Level Undergraduate Student. Familiar with cameras


however, may not be experts, and may not know much about a DSLR
camera. Students will not be professionals and are more than likely someone
who is just refreshing on photography or is coming in as an adult continuing
education student. Introduction level instruction concepts and methods.

Content Analysis:

Students should be familiar with a basic and/or a DSLR camera.


o This may be generally assumed knowledge, or learned from another
course.
Students should know what basic camera functions are ex: turning it on,
reviewing pictures, etc.
o This is generally assumed knowledge.
Students should be familiar with basic camera terms (ex: shutter, shutter
speed)
o This may either be generally assumed knowledge, something they
have heard when speaking of cameras, or learned from another
course.

General Goals:

Learn about the most common photography rules, and terms.


Learn about the basic camera functions and adjustments: shutter speed,
ISO, exposure triangle, etc.
Learn the common photography concepts and tips.
Learn and identify key elements that are necessary to create a quality
picture.
Students will be able to produce quality pictures using best photography
practices.

Enhancing Learning:

This course will give students the knowledge and hand son experience to
create quality photos. Students will learn the best photography practices,
terminology, and camera functions to produce pictures that are of good
quality by the standards of the best photography practices. Rubrics will be
used to help students adhere to these practices. Students will be able to
create their own quality photos in the future by using the knowledge they
gain in this course

General Course Assessments


Weekly Multiple Choice Self-Check Quizzes: This assessment is for the
student to review key information. It is a study tool for students for each
module. Each quiz will give a feedback grade but the grade will not be
recorded. Participation points will be given to the students who complete
these assessments. Each assessment will be worth 10 participation points.
Again, these quizzes are to be used as a study tool to review the information
on each module.

Orientation Discussion Board: This assignment will be for students to post


about themselves and get to know their classmates. The student will post a
short synopsis of themselves, what they are studying, and what they expect
out of the class. The students will reply to someone that they have something
in common with. If they do not have anything in common with anyone, they
will comment on someone who has one of the lowest amount of comments.

Weekly photo submission (Blog Format): This assessment will start once we
get into the picture taking material which is around week 4. It is for the
student to upload 3 weekly photos addressing the topics we cover in class
that week. The students will upload 3 photos to a blog that they have
created. The student will also explain how their photo showcased or used the
topic we cover. It checks for conceptual understanding as well as application
after each module. The students will also reply to 2 other students blogs

Camera labeling Introduction assignment: This assessment will have the


students review and label a picture of a camera and camera dial. It will
assess the students knowledge of the camera buttons, and its functions. It
will also

Introductory What Do You Know Survey: This activity is see what the
students know when they first enter the classroom. This survey will also ask
students which camera they intend to use with this course to know what
material we may be working with and how to modify or differentiate the
lesson for different camera types. This will help to guide instruction from this
point forward. Some module modifications may be made if needed.

Photography Portfolio Assignment: This is a comprehensive project that will
assess the technical skills gained throughout the entire course as well as how
to apply it. It takes concepts from each module and combines them into one
project to show how to apply them in a photography setting.

Care and Cleaning document or video Assignment: This assessment


measures whether the students can accurately clean a camera and proper
care techniques. This assignment will involve the student creating a
document step by step of how to clean and store a camera. Students may
also have the option to video themselves cleaning a camera and putting it
away to store while orally giving the instructions as they do it.

Feedback Surveys: There are four of these total. These surveys have been
placed throughout the course to help the instructor gather feedback on areas
that could use improvement.

Module 1: Getting to Know Your Camera (Week 1)
Objectives:

Demonstrate how to turn on the camera.


Describe and demonstrate how to charge the battery.
Explain and demonstrate how to insert the memory card.

Module 2: Camera Care and Cleaning (Week 2)


Objectives:

Demonstrate how to clean the camera screen.


Describe and demonstrate how to clean the lens.
Describe the proper way to store a camera and lens in a camera bag.

Module 3: Basic Camera Functions (Week 3)


Objectives:

Describe what button takes a picture.


Explain what the camera dial is and what is on it.
Demonstrate where to turn on the flash.
Describe and demonstrate put the strap on their camera.
Demonstrate how to review a picture.

Module 4: Shutter Speed and ISO (Week 4)


Objectives:

Define shutter speed.


Demonstrate shutter speed when taking a picture.
Define ISO.

Demonstrate the use of ISO when taking a picture.
Students will learn how to apply ISO to taking a picture.
Create photos using shutter speed and ISO.

Module 5: Aperture & F-Stop (Week 5)


Objectives:

Define and demonstrate aperture.


Apply aperture to taking a picture.
Define and demonstrate f-stop.
Apply F-Stop to taking a picture.
Create photos using shutter speed and ISO.

Module 6: Lighting and Technique (Week 6)

Observe proper lighting techniques.

Examine popular photography techniques

Create photos using proper lighting and photography techniques.

Module 7: Landscapes and Cityscapes (Week 7)

Identify Landscapes.
Identify techniques for taking landscape pictures.

Create photos using landscape and cityscape techniques.

Identify what are Portraits.

Define what is Photo Manipulation.


Illustrate how to Manipulate Photos.

Module 2: Camera Care and Cleaning (Week 2)


Lecture: Slideshow with embedded youtube video for a visual and
auditory reference
o This will include pictures with step by step instructions of how to
clean each part of the camera. Videos will be imbedded into the
slideshow for a visual of how to actually clean it. There is a
possibility of having more than one video for different cameras.

Module 3: Basic Camera Functions/Overview(Week 3) (THIS MODULE


WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR THE DEVELOPED MODULE ASSIGNMENT)
Video overview of camera and its functions (There will be at least 2
videos with and overview of the camera and its functions. One video
will cover Cannon and the other Video will cover a Nikon camera, if
there are other models represented in the classroom I will try to find or
produce a video for those as well)
Lecture: Camera Functions
o This will be a handout as well as a video on the different camera
functions along with different cameras themselves.
Camera Labeling Introduction (Assessment)
o This will be a worksheet given to students with two main brands
of cameras on it and the student is to label the camera functions
on the worksheet and turn it in. If the student can use the
worksheet in an interactive online way that would be easier but
the student may also print the sheet, hand write the answers
and then scan it to turn it in.

o This portfolio will encompass all of the skills the students have
learned. It will have a picture demonstrating each skill. It will
also include 5 photos that demonstrate all of the skills
combined.
