Influence of Humidity On The Breakdown Voltage of D-C. and A.C. Voltages in Air

1) The document investigates the influence of humidity on the breakdown voltage of spark gaps in air. Specifically, it examines how humidity affects the impulseless glow corona, a form of discharge that can occur on sharp edges and thin wires. 2) Tests were conducted on rod-plane and cylindrical spark gaps under both DC and AC voltages across a range of humidity levels. The results showed that humidity has little effect on breakdown voltage when impulseless glow corona precedes breakdown. However, humidity significantly influences breakdown voltage when impulse-like streamer discharges occur. 3) The conclusions provide guidance for how to account for humidity when designing spark gaps and high voltage equipment, which had not been fully addressed in previous research that

trode. If a impulseless glow corona occurs at all, this has 5. Summary
a stabilising effect. That is to say, the breakdown voltage
only occurs at a higher voltage. From the measurements it is clear, that the breakdown
voltage of spark gaps in a non-homogeneous field is in-
fluenced by the absolute humidity. If the breakdown
results from the impulseless glow corona on a positive
electrode, the breakdown voltage falls with increasing
absolute humidity. At high absolute humidities no im-
pulseless glow corona occurs.
