Post-Production and Sound Aesthetics

This document discusses audio post-production and sound aesthetics in video production. Chapter 8 covers topics like linear and nonlinear audio editing, correcting audio problems, postproduction mixing, and controlling sound quality. It describes the equipment in an audio post-production room, including a digital audio workstation. Five major factors that influence sound aesthetics are also outlined: environment, figure/ground, perspective, continuity, and energy. Finally, the concepts of stereo sound and surround sound using multiple speakers are introduced.

8.1 Audio post-production
activities

l Linear and nonlinear sound editing

l Correcting audio problems
l Postproduction mixing
l Controlling sound quality
8.1 Audio post-production
activities: Explanation (1)

l Most audio postproduction involves linear

and nonlinear editing of the sound tracks of
video recordings
l When editing the audio track to serve as a
guide for subsequent video editing, you must
transcribe all spoken material on the source
tapes
8.1 Audio post-production
activities: Explanation (2)

l Postproduction mixing means sweetening

or mixing recorded sound tracks for optimal
quality
l When engaged in mixdowns (reducing the
various sound tracks to stereo or surround
sound) of the audio portion of a video
production, always judge the audio mix
relative to the video.
Visual Representation of Sound

l All nonlinear audio-editing systems show a

visual representation of various sound tracks
8.2 Audio post-production room
(1)

l The audio postproduction room contains the

equipment of a television audio control booth,
plus:
The digital audio workstation (DAW)
Analog audio synchronizer
Keyboards and sampler
Automatic dialogue replacement (ADR) room
8.2 Audio post-production room
(2)

l The audio postproduction room is equipped

to handle most postproduction tasks. It
typically contains a digital audio console, a
patchbay, a digital audio workstation, a reel-
to-reel audiotape recorder, digital cart
players, a MIDI interface, and DAT recorders

Digital Audio Workstation Display
(1)

l There are several computer programs that

facilitate audio editing, audio quality control,
audio effects and audio video
synchronization

8.3 Sound aesthetics (1)

l Five major aesthetic factors in sound control

are:
Environment: sharpening an event through
ambient sounds
Figure/ground: emphasizing the most important
sound source over the general background
sounds
Perspective: matching close-up pictures with
nearby sounds and long shots with distant sounds
8.3 Sound aesthetics (2)

l Five major aesthetic factors in sound control

are:
Continuity: maintaining the quality of sound when
combining various takes
Energy: matching the force and the power of the
pictures with a similar intensity of sound
8.4 Stereo and surround sound

l Surround-sound technology uses three

speakers placed in front of the listener and
three in back to produce a sound field that
surrounds the listener.

Surround Sound

l The 5.1 Dolby

surround-sound
system uses six
speakers: three
in front and three
in back. The
rear-center
speaker is a
subwoofer for
very low sounds
