5.0 PROCEDURE
Note: It is the responsibility of all parties involved (SO, HO, OO) to review the COP for each inspection order to
determine where special requirements exist. Client specific or product specific inspection criteria that are stated in
a COP, Product Specification and/or Inspection Protocol for the inspection in concern will always REPLACE the
BV Standard Inspection Criteria that appears in a General SOP.
Note: The terms roll and piece are used interchangeably throughout this document.

5.1 Fabric Sampling

5.1.1 Sampling for inspection of bulk fabric generally does not follow the same parameters as for garments. Typical
sampling parameters for Fabrics are listed below. The parameters to be used for each inspection will be stated
in the COP.
5.1.2 Lot Size = Total shipment length in yards or meters.
5.1.3 Sample Size = The length of fabric to be inspected for a particular shipment.
5.1.3.1 Sample Size is most commonly calculated as follows:
When Lot size > 10,000 yards: Sample Size = (Square Root of Lot Size) x 10

When Lot size < 10,000 yards: Sample Size = 1,000 yards

When Lot size < 1,000 yards: Sample Size = Lot Size
Example: Total yardage in an order is 12,000 yards.
Sample Size = (Square Root of 7500 12000yards) x 10 = 1095 yards

5.1.3.2 In place of the Sample Size calculation above, certain clients may request that a specific percentage of
the total fabric is inspected (5%, 10%, 20%, etc.)
5.1.4 Roll Selection / Piece Selection = The number of rolls or pieces from where the Sample Size is selected.
5.1.4.1 The required Sample Size will be selected at random from the rolls present in the shipment. The entire
length of each roll or piece selected will be inspected until the required Sample Size is completed.
5.1.4.2 A minimum of 1 roll per color should be selected.
5.1.4.3 Sample Size and Roll Selection for shipments containing more than 1 style and/or color of fabric should
be discussed and agreed with client.

5.2 Carton Selection

If rolls are in cartons, performed the same as Final Random Inspection - Section 5.1 of SOP GP011.

5.3 Inspection of Export Cartons

Performed the same as Final Random Inspection - Section 5.2 of SOP GP011.

5.4 Product Inspection Visual

5.4.1 Inspect each product for conformity to client's requirements (approved samples, product specifications, color
standards, pictures, etc.).
5.4.2 General Appearance - Check if product is same style, material, design, pattern, and color as specified.
5.4.3 Workmanship - Inspect and grade the selected samples in accordance with the 10 POINT SYSTEM or the 4
POINT SYSTEM explained in point 5.8 and 5.9, or as specified in the COP or contract. The primary goal of
these inspection systems is to grade fabric rolls/pieces as "First Quality" or "Second Quality" (also referred to as
"A" or "B" Quality). The importance of these systems is to determine the absence of knitting or weaving defects
and dyeing or printing defects. A fabric may be acceptable as far as width, length, weight, color, etc., but the
number of manufacturing defects may make it unsuitable for the intended purpose.
5.4.4 Color - Check for color shading differences within a product and between products of the same style/color.
5.4.5 Odor, Touch & Feel - Check if the fabric and other materials have the same smell, feel or "hand" as the
approved samples. If non-conformance found, the result will be pending. Samples will be drawn and send to
client for further evaluation.
5.4.6 Labeling / Printing / Marking - Check that the correct roll labels/hangtags are present in the specified locations
and are attached in the specified manner.
5.4.7 Classify, count and record all defects. Mark all defects with arrow stickers and present those products to the
supplier/factory representative.Mark defects at selvage by chalk.

5.5 Product Inspection Packing

5.5.1 Inspect all internal and external packaging materials for conformity to client's requirements.
5.5.2 Check type, condition, external dimensions and closure method of shipping cartons if any.
5.5.3 Check type, condition, location, color and text content of marking on shipping cartons if any or directly placed on
the roll of fabric.
5.5.4 Check type, condition, color, fit, marking, closure method and dimensions of roll protection polybags. Rolls are
often placed in individual polybags.
5.5.5 Check for presence of vacuumed polybags, and other devices used for protection during shipping.
5.5.6 Classify, count and record all defects.

5.6 Measurements & Weight

5.6.1 Roll Measurements - Check the actual versus the stated length, width of each roll inspected.
5.6.1.1 Rolls found to deviate more than 2% from the length of the roll ticket shall be rejected. Penalty points
will not be assigned for roll length variation, but shall be noted on the inspection report.
5.6.1.2 The entire shipment shall be rejected if the total measured yards in the sample audit deviates 1% or
more from the ticketed yards.
5.6.1.3 Fabric width will be checked a minimum of three times during the inspection of a roll, beginning, middle
and end. The roll width will be checked more often if the fabric is close to the specified minimum width
of or if the fabric width is uneven.
5.6.1.4 Rolls having a measurement of less than the specified purchased width will not be accepted.
5.6.1.5 For woven fabric, rolls having a measurement of more than 1 wider than the specified purchased width
will not be accepted. But for the stretched woven fabric and knitted fabric, it can be accepted up to 2
wider than the specified purchased width.
5.6.1.6 Overall fabric width is measured from the outside of the selvage to the outside of the opposite selvage.
5.6.1.7 The cuttable fabric width is measured by excluding the fabric selvages and/or tenter pin marks, bare,
unprinted, uncoated or otherwise untreated surface portions of the base fabric.
5.6.2 Recording Measurements - Record the exact measurements in the Measurement Sheet provided in SD0034.
Inspector should use a separate set of datasheets to record the measurements during inspection.
5.6.3 Fabric Weight - Check and record the weight of the fabric using the factory die cut which will cut a defined piece
of fabric which then should be weighed using the factory scale. The result will be recorded in grs/m2 or oz./y2.
The inspector must weight fabric from 2 different rolls per color. If no client specified tolerance is given,
acceptable level is +/- 5%.

5.7 Inspection Methods

5.7.1 Technical Examination - Finished goods should be examined in units of one complete roll or piece and may be
examined by machine or over a perch.
5.7.1.1 The machine or perch shall be placed perpendicular to the rays of light and the material shall run at an
angle of 45 to vertical.
5.7.1.2 Inspection shall be made using north daylight free from reflections and shadows, or an approved type
of indoor lighting.
5.7.1.3 Unless otherwise agreed upon by buyer and seller, fabric is to be examined for defects only on the face
side.
5.7.1.4 All fabrics should be inspected cuttable width.
5.7.1.5 For each roll/piece to be inspected, the number and type of Penalty Points are assigned as
summarized below.
5.7.1.6 Upon completion of the inspection, the total Penalty Points are calculated per roll/piece and for the
entire shipment. From these totals and the length of fabric inspected, the grading of "First Quality or
"Second Quality" is determined.

5.8 Workmanship - 4 Point System

5.8.1 The 4 Point System provides a means of defining defects according to their severity by assigning demerit or
penalty points. All types of fabrics, whether grey or finished, knit or woven, can be graded by this system.
Visible defects are scored in proportion to the size of the defect.
5.8.2 Penalty points - All defects in any direction, with the exception of holes, are scored as follows:
DEFECT SIZE PENALTY POINTS

Defect < 3 inches 1

3 inches < Defect < 6 inches 2

6 inches < Defect < 9 inches 3

Defect > 9 inches 4

5.8.3 Unless otherwise agreed upon by buyer and seller, fabric is to be examined for defects only on the face side.
5.8.4 All holes are scored 4 points regardless of size.
5.8.5 No single yard shall be penalized more than 4 points.
5.8.6 5.8.1.3.4 Any defect of a continuous nature such as dye streaks, barre', needle lines, etc. is penalized four (4)
points for each linear yard. If the defects running continuously for more than 10 yards, the roll will be considered
as rejected.
5.8.7 Defects appearing within 1 inch / 2.5 cm of either edge (overall width) shall be disregarded.
5.8.8 Color shading within a dye lot may not vary within a roll/piece or between rolls/pieces. The shade must match
the approved sample standard (swatch card).
5.8.9 Roll to roll and lot to lot shading must be no less than 4, on the AATCC Gray Scale.
5.8.10 Full width ( 6 10 wide ) shade bands will be taken from each roll during the fabric inspection process. The
inspector will use these bands to compare shading within a roll and roll to roll.
5.8.11 Primary light source for color shade checking is D65, and secondary light sources are TL84 /CWF & F / INCA.
5.8.12 Every selected roll will be cut 6 x full width both at the beginning and end for color verification.
5.8.13 Every color and dyelot will be collected in A4 size x 2 sets as shipment samples. (1 set for client, 1 set for office).
Upon client specific request, full width (10 x full width) samples may be collected and send for client reference.
5.8.14 Rolls with side to side, side center side, or end to end shading, must be no less than 4-5 Gray Scale rating
according to the AATCC Gray Scale. Four points shall be assigned to each yard of the inspected roll that
contains this type of shading defect.
5.8.15 If the shade of greige fabric being inspected does not match the provided approval sample, must be no less
than 4-5 Gray Scale rating, the shipment will fail the inspection. No penalty points will be assigned to the rolls for
the off shade condition. The inspection of greige fabric will continue, all rolls will be graded accordingly.
5.8.16 If the shade of finished fabric being inspected does not match the provided approval sample, must be no less
than 4-5 Gray Scale rating, the shipment will fail the inspection. No penalty points will be assigned to the rolls for
the off shade condition. The inspection of finished fabric will continue, all rolls will be graded accordingly.
5.8.17 Any roll having shade discrepancy below specified standard shall be graded as B, but penalty points must also
be count for weaving or knitting defects found in roll.

5.8.18 Irregularities normal to the existing state of the art or beyond reasonable control of the manufacturer or inherent
in any specified type of construction shall not be classified as defects and shall not be assigned any penalty
points.

5.8.19 The following conditions are not acceptable if prevalent in a roll/piece:

Misprints Dye Streaks
Stains Thick/thin Places
Dirt Fly
Rope Marks Weak/Tender Places
Torn Selvage Wavy Cloth

5.8.20 Grading - 4 Point System

5.8.20.1 In general, First Quality An individual roll/piece is graded a "First" if the total Penalty Points per 100
square yards do not exceed 28. Similarly, the Average number of points per 100 square yards may not
exceed 20 for an entire shipment to be considered First quality. However, different fabric may have
different acceptable levels.
5.8.20.2 Second Quality A roll/piece is graded a Second if the total Penalty Points per 100 square yards
exceed 28.
5.8.20.3 Example:
Total yardage in order: 2,400 yards
Total yards inspected: 490 yards (refer to Sec 5.1)
Average cuttable width 39
Acceptable Penalty Points: Not to exceed 28 Points per 100 square yards
Total Penalty Points found: 192 Points
192 x 3600/(average cuttable width x 490 )
Calculation:
192/490 x 100 = 39 36Points per 100 square yards.
Result: Second Quality (Unacceptable)

5.9 Workmanship - 10 Point System

5.9.1 Imperfections and Irregularities
Imperfections are defects which can be prevented under normal conditions with reasonable care.
Irregularities are defects beyond the reasonable control of the manufacturer or those natural to
any particular quality or construction of fabric. For the purpose of grading, such irregularities
should not be considered as imperfections.
5.9.1.1 Classification of Imperfections
Vertical imperfections or those running parallel to the warp thread.
Horizontal imperfections or those running parallel to the filling thread.
5.9.1.2 Penalty points for imperfections:
VERTICAL OR WARP DEFECTS HORIZONTAL OR FILLING DEFECTS

10 inches < Defect < 36 inches 10 points Half width < Defect < Full Width 10 points

5 inches < Defect <10 inches 5 points 5 inches < Defect < Half Width 5 points

1 inch < Defect < 5 inches 3 points 1inch < Defect < 5 inches 3 points

Defect < 1 inch 1 point Defect < 1inch 1 point

5.9.1.3 No single yard should be penalized more than 10 points.

5.9.1.4 A combination of both warp and filling defects when occurring in a single yard should not be penalized
more than 10 points.
5.9.1.5 Any warp or filling defects occurring repeatedly throughout the entire roll/piece automatically makes it
"Second Quality".
5.9.1.6 Imperfections appearing within one-half inch/2.5 cm of either edge should be disregarded.
5.9.1.7 The following dyeing and/or printing conditions, if prevalent in a roll/piece, will make it a "Second":
Calendar Marks Misprints
Chafe Rope Marks
Clip Marks (more than 1/2 of an inch from selvage) Side to Side Shading
Dye Streaks Stains
Embossing Roller Marks/Damage Tears along Selvage
Finishing Dirt Weak or Tender Places

5.9.2 Grading - 10 Point System

5.9.2.1 "First Quality" - A roll/piece is graded a "First" if the total Penalty Points do not exceed the total yardage
of the piece. Similarly, the Average number of Penalty Points may not exceed the total shipment length
for an entire shipment to be considered First quality.
5.9.2.2 "Second Quality" - A roll/piece is graded a "Second" if the total Penalty Points exceed the total yardage
of the piece.
5.9.2.3 An increase of not more than 10% in Penalty Points is allowed on First Quality fabrics that are over 50
inches wide.
5.9.2.4 Example:
Total yardage in order: 7,500 yards
Total yards inspected: 1095 yards (refer to Sec 5.1)
Acceptable Penalty Points: Not to exceed 1095
Total Penalty Points found: 442 Points
Calculation: 442 does not exceed 1095
Result: First Quality (Acceptable)

5.9.3 10 Point System - Specific Criteria

5.9.3.1 Full Width Defects
No roll that contains more than four full width defects per one hundred linear yards, shall be
accepted as first quality.
No roll shall be accepted that contains a major defect in the first or last three yards of the rolls. A
major defect is considered to be any three or four point defect.
No roll shall be accepted as first quality that exhibits a noticeable degree of lose or tightness
along either or both selvedges, or ripples, puckers, folds or creases in the body of the fabric that
would prevent the fabric from lying flat when being spread in a conventional manner.
5.9.3.2 Running Defects
Any defect found to repeat and /or run in a continuous manner will constitute a running defect. All
running defects must be assigned four points to every yard in the roll that the running defect
occurs.
Any roll having a running or repeating defect through more than ten continuous yards shall be
rejected regardless of point count. (Note: Less than 50yds/roll shall be rejected at more than
three continuous yards).
5.9.3.3 Splices
No rolls shall be accepted as first quality containing more than one splice or two joined pieces.
No rolls shall be accepted that contains a spliced piece less than thirty (30) yards in length
unless otherwise stated in the purchasing agreement.

5.9.3.4 Bowing
For both woven & knit fabric, no rolls shall be accepted as first quality that exhibit bow or bias or
more than 2% for print or check fabric & 3% for solid fabric. A bow is an uneven deviation of a
weft or course line from a line drawn perpendicular to the selvedge of the fabric. A bow can have
many different forms. Therefore each section of a bow must be calculated individually.
Single Bow (over whole width of fabric):
Calculation: % Bow = Maximum deviation from perpendicular line x 100
width of fabric

Double Bow (2 bows over width of fabric):

Calculation: % Bow = Maximum deviation from perpendicular line x 100
width of fabric

Each bow is calculated individually. The larger variation of the two is counted.

Variable Bow (uneven bow,hook etc.)

Calculation: Record the maximum deviation for each 12 increment of the width of the fabric.
The largest of all the individual variation is used.

5.9.3.5 Skewing
For woven fabric, no rolls shall be accepted as first quality that exhibit skewing more than 2% for
print or check fabric & 3% for solid fabric.
The skew is straight line variation of a weft or course line from a line drawn perpendicular to the
selvedge of the fabric.
Calculation: % Skew = Maximum deviation from perpendicular x 100
Width of fabric
