Within the Discipline

In my Interdisciplinary Studies courses, there are several skills

that I have been able to take and apply to my RL job. When it
comes to teaching, there are several different types of learners.
You have kinesthetic learners, visual learners, and auditory
learners. Within my hall, there are several types of residents. I
have residents that are out all of the time, they have friends in
and out of the hallway. I have residents that will only come out of
their rooms if you physically go to their doors to invite them to
events. Then, I have residents that never come out or are never
in their rooms. The connection that I can make between the
different types of learners and the different types of residents, is
that you have to do things that apply to everyone. In the
classroom, youd integrate different strategies that would allow
those students to be included and learn the lesson. In
comparison, I am expected to create events and activities that
will include the three types of residents. Inclusion is the main
focus of both my education classes and my residential leader job
expectations.

Beyond the Discipline

As a residential leader, you are held to higher standards than the

average student. When you walk around campus, there are a ton
of people that may know you, but you dont know them; this is
because they know you from the organizations that you are in
around campus, such as RL&L. So, it is important to always be
the best that you can be, no matter where you are. Youll always
have people watching you, people that see you as their role
model. This is such an important concept to understand when it
comes to being an RL.

Beyond Academics

Through my education classes, I am required to do observation

hours at an elementary school in a surrounding town. I am
currently observing a kindergarten class in Lipan, where I assist
the teacher in conducting lessons, create lesson plans, read aloud
to the class, and help solve situations that may arise in the
classroom. These observation hours not only prepare me for my
future teaching job, but also the real world. In the real world,
problems will arise. When those problems come up, sometimes I
will have to solved them on my own, and because I have this
experience from the classroom, I feel comfortable enough to
strategize and solve any obstacle that is thrown in my way.

Outside of the classroom, and here on campus, I have been

involved with the womens club basketball team, participated on
an intramural co-ed basketball team, am a part of Tarletons TPE
program, and am currently a member of the National Society of
Leadership and Success. These organizations have helped
shaped me as a person, and have showed me how important
teamwork is, as well as how important it is to work on yourself, as
an individual.

Interconnectedness

In my two years of being at Tarleton, I have participated in both

Round-Up and Service Day, both years. Back home, my mother
used to work for United Way and is a part of Rotary, so I was
always caught up in volunteering for my community. Whether I
was volunteering to put out flags throughout the town, or
organizing things such a ping pong balls for a bingo game, I was
always caught up in the community. So when I came to Tarleton, I
loved seeing that I had the opportunity to volunteer around the
community. You get the chance to meet new people and make a
good impression for Tarleton. When it comes to the community,
its always nice to know where you live and about the people that
live there.

Global Awareness

There are always new world events happening, every day. Most of
the events are controversial, so naturally, everyone will have their
own opinion, which they are entitled to. When it comes to
political views or what you believe in spiritually, it is important to
stick to your own beliefs, but it is also important to listen to
others. One problem that I see in the world right now, is that
people are too caught up in their own opinions and too stubborn
to see the other outlooks that exist. This ties in with respecting
others. If you wont listen to someones opinion, it can come off
as rude; and you dont want that. Just because you listen to
somebody elses opinion, doesnt mean that it will change yours.
Stick to your guns, respect others opinions, and youll be fine.

Broader Implications

When I become a teacher, I will work with students that come

from a variety of backgrounds, different ethnicities, and different
social classes. Being an RL prepares me for that classroom
setting that I will be in, and being an education major definitely
prepared me for being an RL. I am in charge of a hallway full of
business majors, so I am not able to connect with them through
the classes that they take, but I am able to connect with them on
a social level and I am able to find ways to get them involved in
the hallway, as well as on the rest of campus. Becoming an RL
has been one of the most rewarding experiences, and I am so
grateful to have this opportunity to grow and get outside of my
comfort zone.
