Slab Design

This document summarizes the design of a reinforced concrete slab. The slab has dimensions of 4.7m x 9.45m with a thickness of 50cm. The slab is designed to support a total factored load of 26kN/m^2. Reinforcement is calculated to be 16mm bars at 20cm spacing in the short span direction and 10mm bars at 20cm spacing in the long span direction. Shear strength and deflection are checked and found to meet code requirements. The slab design is adequate to support the expected loads.

DESIGN OF SLAB

Thick 50 cm
S1 DESIGN OF SLAB Grid D-G/1-4 Sh.Bar y 16 @ 20 c/c
Effective span lx= 4.7 mt Lo.Bar y 10 @ 20 c/c
ly= 9.45 mt
Ratio of ly/lx= 2.011 mt < 2 consider the slab is two way
Assume thickness of slab(D)= 500 mm eff.depth (d)=D-eff.cover= 480 mm
Loads on slab
Dead load of slab= 500 /1000* 25= 12.5 KN/sqmt
Live load= 2 KN/sqmt
Floor finish= 2.2 KN/sqmt
Fillimg= 0 *18 0 KN/sqmt
Additional wall load= KN/sqmt
Total load on slab = 16.7 KN/sqmt
Factored load on slab(w) =1.5*Total load on slab= 25.05 KN/sqmt say 26 KN/sqmt
Bending Moment coefficients as per IS-456-1978 Table 22
Since the slab three edges discontinous one short edge continous
Short span Long span
ly/lx= 1 1.1
ax= 0.043 0.059 ay= -
For 2.011 ax= 0.058 ay= 0.057
Mx=ax*w*lx*lx= 33.31 KN-mt/mt along short span
My=ay*w*lx*lx= 32.74 KN-mt/mt along long span
Use M20 grade of concrete and Fe415 grade of steel
b = for 1mt = 1000 mm
K= 0.145
PT required = 0.22 %
Referring to table 40 for fy=415N/sqmm and fck=20N/sqmm
using 16 mm dia at 20 cm spacing for short span Astx= 1005 sqmm
using 10 mm dia at 20 cm spacing for long span Asty= 392.5 sqmm
Form table D Mu,lim/bdd=.617N/sqmm
Therefore Mu,lim=2.76x1000xbxdxd= 635.9 KN-m
Actual bending moment of 33.31 KN-m < limiting bending moment
Referring to Chart 22 -reinforcement percentage provided 0.2093333 %
Actual ratio of Span/eff.depth = 9.7917
for pt = 0.2093 % Referring chart 22 Deflection check
Max(Span/eff.depth)= 26 9.7917
For c.s slab = 1.3 26 33.8 9.79
Hence the slab is adequate for controlling deflection
The code requires that the minimum area of steel be 0.12 %
PT required = 0.22
Ast=0.12%*b*d= 1056 sqmm < Astx Hence OK
< Asty Hence OK
Check for shear force at short edge
Shear force=1/2*w*lx= 61.1 KN/mt
Nominal shear stress(Tv)=Max.S.F./b*d= 0.13 N/sqmm
% tension steel=100*Asty/(b*d) = 0.08 %
Shear strength of M20 concrete for 0.0818 %
%steel M20 from table 13 IS 456 1978
0.25 0.36
0.5 0.48
Tc= 0.2793 N/sqmm
Shear strength in slabs(T'c)= kTc` where k= 1.3
T'c= 0.363 N/sqmm > 0.127 Hence the slab is safe in shear.
for 500 mm thick slab clause 47.2.1.1
