Math - Measurement

The lesson plan is for a 45-minute 2nd grade math class on measurements. The teacher will introduce measuring length in inches using a ruler. Students will work in pairs to measure objects around the classroom that are approximately 1, 4, and 6 inches long. They will record their findings on a worksheet. To assess learning, the teacher will observe students during group work and discuss their homework assignments.

Subject: Math Grade Level: 2nd
Title of Lesson: Measurements Lesson Length: 45 minutes
Overview of the Lesson
Lesson Summary:
I will introduce the lesson while building on background knowledge from the
previous lesson. Go over objective and expectations. Instruct and model how
to use a ruler. Then explain the group activity. Next, go over the worksheet
together. Closing, the wrap-up of the lesson and assign homework.
Lesson Objectives:
The students will be able to estimate and measure items using inches.
Materials/Equipment to be Used in Teaching the Lesson:
Ruler
Paper clip
Unit 15-2 worksheet
Massachusetts Framework Standards:
2.MD.A.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using
appropriate tools such as rulers, yardstick, meter sticks, and measuring
tapes.
Enduring Understandings:
Big Ideas: The students will understand that the length of any object
can be used as a measurement unit for length, but a standard unit, such
as an inch or centimeter, is always the same length.
Essential Questions:
How are standard units, such as inches, used to measure length?
When do you measure length?
When looking at a ruler which side do we start from?
Content
Factual Content:
One can measure the length, width, and height of an object in inches.
1 inch is the same length on every inch ruler.
If an object measures longer than the halfway mark on a ruler, use the
greater number; if an object is shorter than the halfway mark, uses the
lesser number.
Vocabulary:
Length, inch (in.), width, height, and nearest inch
Tier 1: Length
Tier 2: Width and height
Tier 3: Inch an nearest inch

Action/Instructional Procedures

Anticipatory Set: Today, we will learn how to measure length, or how long
or tall an object is, using a standard unit called an inch. Go over
objectives and explicit expectations.

Step One: Review and build off of background knowledge from the previous lesson

Step Two: Go over vocabulary

Step Three: Model how to use a ruler over the Elmo. Show children a small paper clip. 1
inch is about the length of a small paper clip. Go over some guidelines on how to use a
ruler.

Step Four: Explain the activity. Students will be broken into pairs to find three different
objects to measure with their partner. They should find an object that is about 1 inch, 4
inches, and 6 inches long. Once, the students have fond and written down their objects on
the worksheet we will go over their findings as a group.

Step Four: Explain independent work. I will walk around to checking on the students.

Closure: Review independent work as a class and go over any questions students may
have. Students will summarize what we learned.

Homework/Extension Activities: 15-2 from their math workbook.
