Dakota State University College of Education Lesson Plan Format

This lesson plan is for a kindergarten class on shapes. The students will review shapes through a song, class discussion identifying attributes of circles, rectangles, triangles and squares, and exploring shapes using pattern blocks, geoboards and Play-Doh. The lesson goals are for students to relate 2D shapes to real-world objects and describe shape attributes. Formative assessment will be through a class discussion on shapes. Students of varying skills will work together at stations to support each other's learning.

LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Megan Smidt

Grade Level: Kindergarten
School: May Overby Elementary
Date: Jan. 24, 2017
Time: 12:20

Reflection from prior lesson:

The class met both objectives today. They did well constructing the shapes and
describing/comparing the shapes. The students were really engaged and I do not need to
make any changes to tomorrows lesson.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

MP5: Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6: Attend to precision.
MP7: Look for and make use of structure.
K.CC.4.a: When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing
each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and
only one object.
K.CC.4.b: Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted.
The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which
they were counted.
K.CC.4.c: Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one
larger.
K.MD.3: Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each
category and sort the categories by count.
K.G.1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the
relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of,
behind, and next to.
K.G.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
K.G.3: Identify shapes as two-dimensional or three-dimensional.
K.G.4: Analyze and compare two- and three- dimensional shapes, in different sizes and
orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts, and
other attributes.
K.G.5: Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components and drawing
shapes.

Lesson Objectives:
During the class discussion, students will be able to relate 2-D shapes to real-world
objects with 90% accuracy.

After the class discussion, students will describe the attributes of circles, rectangles,
triangles, and squares with 90% accuracy.

Materials Needed:

Song about shapes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJxq0kR8yNc

Pattern blocks
Geoboard
Rubber bands
Play-Doh

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

There are twenty-five students in this class. The classroom has five tables with five
students sitting at each table. There is a wide range of skill and developmental levels.
They like to work in groups and do well working together. There is a carpet at the front of
the classroom for whole class instruction and plenty of room for working in partners if
needed. Technology is available in the computer lab and there is a Promethean Board in
the classroom.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

getting attention:

Everyone stand up and find a spot where you cannot touch anyone else. We are
going to practice our shapes by singing a song! Lets listen the first time together.
As you catch on to some words you can sing along!

relating to past experience and/or knowledge:

Yesterday I had you look at some shapes and tell me what they are and how
many sides they have! You all did very good and know a lot about shapes! That is
what we are going to be talking about in math!

creating a need to know:

Shapes are so important! We need to know them to be able to describe objects in

the world to the people around us!

sharing objective, in general terms:

Today we are going to learn more about shapes and how to describe them!

2. Content Delivery (15 minutes, Class Discussion)

Pull up the document with the different shapes on it.

Yesterday we talked about different shapes that we found in our classroom and
we made a shape picture! Today we are going to explore shapes by using pattern
blocks, geoboards, and Play-Doh!

But first lets talk about some shapes! Put up a picture about a circle. What is
this shape? Its a circle. How many sides does a circle have? Does it have any
sharp edges? What is something that a circle look like? Are its edges rough or
smooth?

Put up a picture of a rectangle. What is this shape? Its a rectangle. How many
sides does a rectangle have? How many corners does a rectangle have? A corner is
where two sides meet, like right here. Point to a corner. Does a rectangle have
straight or rounded sides?

Put up a picture of a square. What is this shape? Its a square. What shape does it
look kind of like? What is different about a square and a rectangle? The square
has four sides just like a rectangle, but a squares four sides are all the same
length. On the rectangle, they have two short sides and two long sides. What else
can you tell me about a square? It also has four corners. The lines are also
straight.

Put up a picture of a triangle. What is this shape? It is a triangle. What can you
tell me about a triangle? How many sides does a triangle have? Are the sides
rounded or straight? How many corners does it have?

Now, over on the board I have a graph started. What I want you to do is put your
name magnet on the marker board above the shape you made your shape picture
out of. If you made it out of a rectangle, put it right above the rectangle. Then the
next person can put it above yours. This will show us which shape had the most
pictures. I will dismiss you by tables.

Have the students return to their seats. Sing the ready signal song. Okay, we are
going to do some different stations to explore some math materials. I want you to
be using these materials to practice making shapes. I will explain each station to
you. These are pattern blocks. I want you to take these different shaped blocks
and use them to make a picture. You can use any shapes you would like, but really
think about the shapes we have been talking about.
Show the students a geoboard. This is a Geoboard. You will use Geoboards and
rubber bands to make designs and shapes. You stretch the rubber bands over two
edges continue that to make shapes. I would like you to practice making shapes
on the Geoboards.

Lastly we have Play-Doh. With the Play-Doh, make sure you are keeping this on
the table. Practice making shapes with the Play-Doh.

I have six different stations set up. You will rotate when I tell you to. My
expectations for you are that you will play appropriately. We will only use the
rubber bands on the Geoboard. If I see any of you pointing rubber bands or
playing with the in an inappropriate way, then you will move down straight to red
on the clip chart and will sit in your seat with your head down for the rest of the
exploration time! I will split you up in groups and you may begin!

Students will work in stations and explore the shapes.

3. Closure (5 minutes)

At your table, I would like for you to talk at your table about a square, rectangle,
triangle, and circle. I am going to have you tell me the characteristics of one
shape. Talk about how many sides they have, if any. Are their edges round or
straight? I will give you three minutes.

All right, Blue table, what can you tell me about a square? Red table, what can
you tell me about a triangle. Green table, what can you tell me about a circle?
Yellow table, what can you tell me about a rectangle? Purple table what is
different about a square and a rectangle?

You may go ahead and have free choice time. Please play respectfully.

B. Assessments Used

Informal: Discussion about shapes.

C. Differentiated Instruction

Students will receive aid on making shapes with their different stations. I will put a
higher-level student with a lower-level student so they can help each other learn about the
shapes!
