Eye Dissection Report Write Up 2014

The document describes a year 8 student's dissection and analysis of a cow's eye. The student aims to identify the internal and external parts of the eye. They label a diagram, name structures like the cornea, iris, and optic nerve. The student compares a cow eye to a human eye, noting similarities like the pupil and iris, but differences like shape. Key features identified include the oval pupil and lens shape. The student explains how the pupil enlarges in the dark to let in more light.

Aim: The aim is to dissect a cows eye and identifying and labelling the different
parts inside.

Method:

!
Results:

a) Labelled diagram of Outside of Eye (Draw and upload photo)

Discussion:

a) Use the picture below to name the parts of the eye.

1) Cornea

2) Sclera

3) Optic Nerve

4) Iris

5) Pupil

6) Retina

7) Tapetum

8) Lens

9) Vitreous humor

b) Which part of the eye is responsible for the following?

i) Contains sensory receptors for vision. Lens

ii) The coloured portion of the eye. Iris
iii) This structure changes shape to focus light on the retina. Cillary
muscles
iv) The opening of the iris through which light passes. Pupil
v) Helps the eyeball keep its round shape and prevents it from
collapsing. Sclera
vi) Outer layer of the eye. Protects the eye and helps keep its shape.
Cornea
vii) Cord at the back of the eyeball. Carries neural impulses from the eye
to the brain. Optic Nerve
viii) Fills space between the lens and cornea. Plays a part in focusing light
rays. Aqueous Humour
ix) Dark coloured layer underneath the retina. Contains blood vessels
which supply nutrients and oxygen to the eye. Retina

c) Discuss the similarities and differences between the cows eye and a
human eye (present this in a table).
Human eye Similarities Cow eye
Pupil is round Is an eye Glares when light
is shone against it
Human eye Similarities Cow eye
Different colors Has a pupil and Pupil is oval
an iris
Able to move eye Has the same Always brown
more freely structure

d) List 3 key features of the outside of the eye. Pupil is oval, iris is always
brown and when light is shone against it, it glares.

e) List 3 key features of the inside of the eye. The lens is an oval shape, the
aqueous humor is a black jelly and the tapetum is like a mirror

f) Describe the shape of your lens. What did it do when you looked at
some newspaper print through it? The shape of the lens is an oval and the
letters or either picture underneath because larger.

g) Is the aqueous humour behind or in front of the pupil? The aqueous

humour is in front of the pupil

h) Would the pupil be large or small in a dark environment? Explain your

answer referring to rods and cones. The pupil will enlarge because there is
no light to pass through the eye. The photoreceptor cone will widen the pupil
and will let more light but less color enter the eye, moving to the retina.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, we were able to see and identify all the parts of the cow eye like the
retina, sclera and lens.
