Part I: Reading Comprehension (40 marks + Bonus 5 marks)

Read the two passages below and answer the questions that follow.
Passage A
1 In many countries, heart disease kills a lot of women and even more men. There
are four major causes of this disease and these are smoking, poor or bad diet, a
family history of heart disease and stressful work. Among these sources of
trouble, the most common cause is stress.

5 What is stress, and how do you feel when you are under stress? Imagine that
you live alone you are lying in bed at night and, suddenly, you hear someone
in the kitchen. Immediately your heart begins to beat very fast and you feel that
you can hardly breathe. What you are feeling is not stress, but fear. However,
your body changes in the same way when you feel stress. This means that if you
10 feel anxious and worried during an important examination, your heart may beat
very fast and you may feel breathless too. You are experiencing stress. Another
common situation in which a person is likely to feel stress is having to perform
something, for example, a boring duty, every day.

Let us look at the case of Sandy, a nurse. She felt a lot of stress in her work and
15 began to have bad headaches at the end of the day. Each morning she woke up
more tired than she had been when she went to sleep. She did not want to go
out in the evening with her friends and she felt unhappy all the time.

Finally, she sat down and thought about her life. She saw a lot of illnesses and
death in her work, but that was not the reason she was under stress. The real
20 reason was that she felt unable to make a positive decision in her job she had
to do what the doctors and other nurses told her.

So, Sandy went back to college for further studies. When she graduated, she
found a job where she was part of a team, as before, but where she had
responsibility in making decisions. Her working hours were longer and her
25 work was more difficult than it was when she was a nurse, but she enjoyed it.
She felt she was in control of her life and her work. For Sandy, stress in her old
job had made her change her life, and end a difficult situation. Stress in her new
job became a good thing because it helped her achieve satisfaction in her life
and in her work.

1 Although Mother Teresa has passed away for over 10 years,
her devotion to the poor will never be forgotten. Mother
Teresa was a Catholic and the founder of the Missionaries of
Charity in India. Initially, the charitable organization aimed at
5 helping the poor in India. Later, the Missionaries of Charity
started to accommodate all people in need, including those
who are seriously ill, crippled and orphaned, no matter where
they come from. Mother Teresa spent her whole life taking care of these people and
did not ask for anything in return. Her selflessness made her the winner of the
10 Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. It was not only an honour to Mother Teresa, but also a
recognition of the importance of love and care.

The year 2003 is special to both Hong Kong and Joseph

Sung. A new disease, SARS, broke out in Hong Kong and
25 spread to other parts of the world quickly. At that time,
Joseph Sung was appointed to be in charge of combating
it. Since SARS was contagious, Joseph Sung had to stay
in the hospital with other doctors and they tried their best
to help the patients who suffered from SARS. A number of
30 doctors died of SARS while treating the disease in hospitals. However, he never
thought of retreating from his work. Instead, he worked very hard to take care of
the patients and made Hong Kong a safe place again. He was named Asian Hero
