Nicholas took Psychology 1010 and learned about the basic structures and functions of the brain and mind, including the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. One significant learning was about problem solving, which involves identifying the real problem, developing strategies like algorithms or heuristics to solve it, and evaluating the results. Problem solving is an important life skill that involves reframing problems and strategies if the initial approach does not work.

My Significant Learning

Over this course, I learned pretty much the basics of how the brain and

mind function. There are many things that contribute to how your mind

works. To name a few specific examples, there are structures in your brain

such as your lobes. You have a frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe and

occipital lobe. Together, these lobes work with one another to have your

mind work properly. Having one or multiple of these lobes function in

adequately could result in a different state of mind. The list goes on and on.

Genes, drugs, environment, culture, etc. can effective your mind.

One item that I have found significant is called problem solving and

this is mentioned in our text book King, L. A. (2012) Experience psychology.

(2nd Ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill. Yes, we all know that when a problem

occurs, we try to find a solution to find it and if the first attempt doesnt

succeed, we try again until we do succeed. We understand this concept, but

there are other factors that we dont think of consciously. When we have a

problem, our mind breaks it down into steps to solve the issue. The first step

is finding and framing the problem. What this means is identify all the

possible problems. The next part of this step is to identify what the real

problem is, why is it a problem and determine if it really is. For example, I

was contemplating on going to summer semester. I wanted to but I felt like I

shouldnt. I also didnt want to go but I felt like I should. That is what I
thought the problem was. However, the real problem was I wouldnt have the

funds in time before tuition would be due.

The next step of problem solving is developing good strategies. When

it comes to solving a problem, we need some sort of plan to overcome the

problem. There are two different types of strategies that we can use when

we are problem solving. The first method is called an Algorithm and the

second method is called a Heuristic. An algorithm is a step by step procedure

and guarantees a solution. The strength of an algorithm is every time the

procedure is followed, there is always a solution. However, the weakness of

an algorithm is that it can be costly, time consuming, and the solution may

not even exist. The second method, Heuristic is a strategy that doesnt

always guarantee a solution. The strength of a heuristic is you can always

find a solution and that it is inexpensive to do. We can consider sub-goals as

a type of heuristic. We can try different ideas and then see if they work or

not.

After developing a good strategy, we want to evaluate our results and

see if it solved the problem. Once we have determined that it has resolved

our problem, we have used the problem-solving method properly. Although,

this can and may happen that the strategy doesnt work. In this case we

rethink, redefine, resolve or in other words, re-find the problem, re-frame

what the real problem is and re-strategize a way to solve the issue.
I find this method of problem solving beneficial to me now and in the

future. I feel it is important for all of us to know how we should solve our

problems that we face each and every day.
