Lesson Plan #8

Social Studies/The Ocean, K/1:30-2:15, April 20th, 2017.

SOL:
K.4 The student will use simple maps and globes to
a) develop an awareness that a map is a drawing of a place to show where things are
located and that a globe is a round model of the Earth;
b) describe places referenced in stories and real-life situations;
c) locate land and water features.
K.5 The student will develop an awareness that maps and globes
a) show a view from above;
b) show things in smaller size;
c) show the position of objects.

Content Outline:
For this lesson we will be learning about the ocean and coral reefs. To start our lesson I
will ask the students what they already know about the ocean and if they have ever been
to one and see one. I will then introduce the ocean and coral reef to them using pictures
and then we will talk about the different animals that live in each. I will then show them a
video. Next, we will make a graph of our favorite coral reef animal and look at our graph
to see how many are in each. Last, we will make a sea turtle and then write a sentence
where the students will write about if they were a sea turtle. To finish this lesson we will
share a couple if we have time.

Rationale:
It is important for students to learn about the ocean and coral reef so that they are aware
of their surroundings and can identify living organisms around them. It is also important
for them to know the different animals that live in the sea so that they can identify them
and know what animal is.

Objectives of Lesson:
Students will be able to identify different animals that live in the sea.
Students will be able to make a graph of their favorite coral reef animal and write a
sentence where they pretend to be a sea turtle.

Lesson Opening:
In order to open this lesson I will start by asking the students what they already know
about oceans. I will then ask if anyone has ever been to the beach/ocean and what it
looks like. We will then talk about the coral reef and see if anyone knows what that is. If
not I will explain it to everyone and begin to show them pictures.

Connection:
Learning about the ocean and coral reefs will help students understand the bigger
picture and help them piece together the world around them. This will give them a
chance to think about what they may have already seen or been to before and think
back on that prior knowledge about what they may have seen or how they may have felt.
This will really help students understand the animals around them as well and why some
live in the water and some live on land.

Instructional Strategies/Processes:
1. In order to open this lesson I will start by asking the students what they already
know about oceans. I will then ask if anyone has ever been to the beach/ocean
and what it looks like. We will then talk about the coral reef and see if anyone
knows what that is. If not I will explain it to everyone and begin to show them
pictures.Once we have talked about the coral reef, I will ask students what types
of sea animals live in the ocean and in the coral reef. We will talk about each one
and then I will show them pictures of ones I have on my Powerpoint.
2. I will then show the students a quick little video on the coral reef so that they can
see it and the different animals that live in it. Then I will show the students
pictures of different animals that live in the ocean once we have named a few so
that the students can see them.
3. Next, I will put a chart on the board that says My Favorite Coral Reef Animal. I
will then call them up a couple students at a time to color in the graph over which
coral reef animal is their favorite from the five I have chosen (seahorse, stingray,
crab, lobster, clown fish). We will then look at our graph, talk about it, and count
how many are in each.
4. Then, we will make sea turtles using paper plates. I will let them color their turtle
and I will have all of the pieces cut out previously. Once the students are done
coloring and gluing on their pieces, I will give each student a lined piece of paper
and they will write about if they were a sea turtle. They can write about where
they would live, what they would eat, what they would do for fun, or whatever
they want. I will walk around to check their sentences before we glue them onto
the back of our turtle. (I will have my turtle that I made displayed in the room so
that students can see how I put my turtle together such as where the head and
arms go.)

Products:
Coral Reef animal chart and sea turtle with sentence about If I was a sea turtle.

Assessment:
In order to assess the students I will have them make their own sea turtle and write a
sentence about If I was a sea turtle. This will help me see what the students understand
about sea turtles and them living in the ocean. I will also be using a lot of questioning to
make sure that student are understanding.

Closure:
In order to close this lesson, students will be finishing their turtle sentence/sentences so
that they can be checked by me. For this lesson, I will not be correcting the students
writing because I want them to be creative and try their best to write their sentence so
that we can display them in the hallway for everyone to see. I will ask the students to
read their sentence to me so that I can see what they are writing about and give them a
chance to look back at the words they have written and give them a chance to hear them
aloud and see if they can correct them by themselves. If time permits, I will have the
students glue their sentence onto the back of their sea turtle so that I can hang them in
the hallway.

Homework:
Students will have no homework.

Differentiation:
For this lesson, I will be making sure that all of my students are on the same page by
walking around the room to make sure everyone is doing what they should be and
writing their sentences. I will work with a couple of my students on their sentences
because they struggle a little more than the rest just to make sure they are getting it and
help them with their sounding out.

Materials/Equipment:
Graph, paper plates, lined paper, stickers, construction paper, Smart Board, glue,
crayons, and pencils, Powerpoint, video.
