Online Project

This document proposes using the website GigglePoetry.com to have 5th grade students practice reading poetry aloud with fluency and expression, rate poems on the site, and write and publish their own original poems. Students would need computers, internet access, and email to implement this lesson. It allows for collaboration, student-centered learning through creating original work, and higher-order thinking like analysis and evaluation. The level of technology implementation is considered a LoTi level 4-5 since students are creating and sharing original work outside the classroom. Internet safety and privacy policies would be followed.

Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in
your classroom: Students would use the site to read, rate, and create original poetry. Students are
required to read poetry with appropriate fluency and will practice this by using the site. The
students will choose a poem off of the site and practice reading it with proper expression to the
class. The class will then decide what they want to rate the poem on the sites Giggle Meter.
After this, students will write their own original poetry an submit it for publication through the
site.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom? Computer, Internet, Email to submit the poetry to the publisher.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Students are reading the poetry of other students across the
country. They will also have the opportunity to share their original poetry.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): They are
writing an original poem on something that inspires them.
c. Higher-order thinking: Students will analyze the different aspects of poetry and
think about how it should be read aloud.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their
product: If students get their work published, it will be shared in classrooms
around the country.
