Lesson Title & Big Idea*: Pivotal Moment Comic Strip Narratives Grade Level*: 3rd Grade
Lesson Overview/Summary*: This lesson integrates visual arts, literacy, and communication arts. Class Periods Required:
First, students will discuss pivotal moments in their life. Next, they will learn about the artist Roy (please circle)
Lichtenstein and his use of the Ben Day dot art technique through a class discussion. Next, the
students will use the Ben-Day Dot technique to create a comic strip to tell a story about a pivotal 1 2 3
moment in their life. The comic strip will have four boxes; up to ONE extra strip can be added if
necessary. After they finish creating their comic strip, the students will share their comic strip
with the class. Finally, the class will have a whole-group discussion to answer the question, Why
is sharing pivotal moments in our life important?

The students will be able to present their comic strip to the class by speaking with a loud volume and communicating
the events that occurred in their comic strip.

individually by stating the pivotal moment that they wrote about, and what their comic strip says. After presentations, the
teacher will display the comic strips in the hallway on a bulletin board.
