Tutorial 4 FEA v1

The document describes performing a finite element analysis on two beam problems. The first problem involves a 10 foot beam with a triangular load of 1000 lbs/ft, and uses a one-element model to find the deflection θB. The second problem involves a beam with given properties subjected to a uniformly distributed load, and uses a two-element model to find the deflections θ2 and θ3. The method involves discretizing the problem, forming element stiffness matrices, assembling into a global stiffness matrix, computing load matrices based on an equivalent nodal loading table, applying boundary conditions, and solving the equations to obtain displacement results.

Given a beam with a wide-flange W310 X 52, A=6650
mm2,depth of 317 mm, E=200 GPa and I = 118.6 x 106 mm4.
The beam is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of
25,000 N/m.
Find V3 , 2 and 3 via finite element analysis.
1. Discrete the problem (use 2 elements)
2. Use the stiffness matrix of a beam to form the element stiffness matrix for
each element.
3. Assemble the element stiffness matrixes into global stiffness matrix.
4. Compute the load matrix for elements (1) and (2) based on table below.

Equivalent Nodal Loading of Beam for load matrix Fi1, Fi2, Fj1 and Fj2

5. Combine the two elements load matrices to obtain the global load matrix.
6. Apply boundary conditions
7. Solve equations simultaneously for the unknown nodal values to obtain the
displacement results.
