Data Collection Reflection

I completed my observations at Pines Elementary School; upon walking into the building,

I felt welcomed. The secretary greeted me and had someone to assist me with locating the

classes. The students were polite and they knew how to behave with guest in the building. The

teachers were very welcoming as well; they also allowed me to assist the students as needed. The

students were very receptive of me and enjoyed having extra help available.

I observed a fourth grade math class; the students were given the task of finding the area

of their classroom. When the students entered the room, they were very active. The teacher

taught a short lesson and then assigned the students with the task of finding the area of their

classroom. I noticed how this assignment allowed the students to freely move and release energy,

as well as problem solve and recall information. I felt that this lesson was developmentally

appropriate for the class. The students enjoyed the lesson.

Visiting the elementary school really helped me with many of my misconceptions of the

elementary school and their work. I realize that the teachers must be very aware of the children

abilities at their ages as well as take that into consideration when planning their lessons.
