Pre Lab

This document describes an experiment to determine the concentration of ascorbic acid in vitamin C tablets and fresh fruit juice through redox titration. The experiment involves preparing standard potassium iodate and sodium thiosulfate solutions. Vitamin C samples are dissolved and titrated with the standard iodate solution, with the excess iodate reacted with the standard thiosulfate solution until the solution turns pale yellow and remains clear when starch indicator is added. Repeating the titration allows calculating the ascorbic acid concentration in the samples.

EXPERIMENT 4: REDOX TITRATION ASCORBIC ACID

Part A: A Primary Standard 0.01 M Potassium Iodate, KIO3, Solution

1. 0.5 g of KIO3 on weighing paper 2. Transfer to volumetric flask, dissolve &

dilute to the mark

3. Calculate & record M of KIO3 soln.

Part B: A Standard 0.1 M Na2S2O3 Solution

6g Na2S2O35H2O
+
250 mL

1. Dissolve 6g Na2S2O35H2O with 2. Fill burette with Na2S2O3 soln, & record initial v.

distilled water, dilute to 250 mL. Stir.

25 mL standard KIO3 soln

+
1 g of KI
+
5 mL H2SO4
+
0.1 g NaHCO3

3. Pipette 25 mL standard KIO3 soln into Erlenmeyer flask.

Add 1 g of solid KI.

Add 5 mL of 0.5 M H2SO4 & 0.1 g of NaHCO3.

EXPERIMENT 4: REDOX TITRATION ASCORBIC ACID

Red brown soln Pale yellow, Add 2 mL starch, Stir until no blue colour.

4. Immediately begin titrating with Na2S2O3 soln. When the red-brown solution changes to a pale
yellow colour, add 2 mL of starch solution. Stirring constantly, continue titrating slowly until the blue
colour disappears.

5. Repeat 2x.

6. Calculate and record the molar concentration of the Na2S2O3 solution.

Part C: Sample Preparation

(a) Vitamin C tablet
1. Read label, determine mass of vitamin C in each tablet. Measure the fraction of the total mass of a
tablet that corresponds to 100 mg of ascorbic acid.

Vit C
+
40 mL H2SO4
+
0.5 g NaHCO3

2. Dissolve vit C in Erlenmeyer flask with 40 mL of 0.5 M H2SO4, and add 0.5 g NaHCO3.

3. Proceed immediately to Part D.

(b) Fresh fruit sample

1. Filter about 120 mL of freshly squeezed 2. Measure the mass of a clean, dry 250 mL
juice through several layers of muslin. Erlenmeyer flask.
EXPERIMENT 4: REDOX TITRATION ASCORBIC ACID

100 mL filtered juice

+
40 mL H2SO4
+
0.5 g NaHCO3

3. Add 100 mL filtered juice & determine the mass.

Add 40 mL of 0.5 M H2SO4, and add 0.5 g NaHCO3.

4. Proceed immediately to Part D.

Part D: Vitamin C analysis

25 mL standard KIO3 soln
+
0.1 g NaHCO3

sample solution from Part C

5 mL H2SO4
+
0.1 g NaHCO3

1. Pipette 25.0 mL standard KIO3 solution (from Part A) into sample solution from Part C.
Add 1 g KI.
Add 5mL 0.5 M H2SO4 and 0.1 g NaHCO3.

Red brown soln Pale yellow, Add 2 mL starch, Stir until no blue colour.

2. Titrate excess I3 in sample with standard Na2S2O3 solution as described in Part B.4.

3. Read & record the final burette reading. Repeat 2x. Calculate % of ascorbic acid in the sample.
