Proposal

In this proposal, I am going to be developing ideas for creating a logo, A3 poster

and CD for a new band who is going to be going on tour soon. I have been given
the opportunity to help the band promote the tour that theyre going on. The
Pixels are a band of 4, including a lead singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer.
They consist of 3 males called Louie, Charlie and Connor and 1 female called
Emily who is the lead singer of the pixels. They are quite a major band especially
in Europe, so the tour here will be in stadiums, and will be called Visions.

Client meeting notes

Before starting this whole project, we had to have a meeting with our client to
get ideas of what exactly theyre looking for in our promotion work. These are
the notes which I got from it. I have to create a logo first, then an A3 poster and
a CD cover.

Working for a group for the pixels have as many people in pixels as I
want
Produce promotional materials
Create a logo first can use from web banner or a new one
Design logo on a storyboard
Create an A3 poster
A3 make sure its correct size
A3 poster must have logo on it
Poster must include dates and venues
CD cover check size
Proposal I will need to research the duel case size and the insert front
spine and back
CD cover must have logo in it
Research what certain things need to be on CD cover
Looking for the quality on graphics
Software Photoshop, paint or adobe illustrator

Establish concept
The Pixels are an R&B/pop/hip-hop group from Manchester. I am going to be
giving them quite a natural, calm theme as their music is more chilled so, even
though their band name is linked to pixels and makes you think of pixelated
images, their theme isnt the same as that. In a previous assignment, I created
the logo as a plain, black and white with a bit of blue grid square in the
background and THE PIXELS is in the middle in tall, slightly slanted capitals.
Some artists promotion work I have been inspired by are Rihanna, Drake and
Jeremih.
Rihanna
is a female R&B/pop/reggae/hip-hop/dance artist from Barbados. These genres
are similar to The Pixels, so getting inspiration off her is quite useful. On the
promotional material, she has used quite a blurry, block capital theme on her
promotional material. I like how she has used the same image on the albums
front and back cover but differently positioned.

Drake is a similar
artist to Rihanna, after bringing out 3 popular songs together, they have similar
music genres like hip-hop and R&B which is both in The Pixels genre list. Id like
my tour poster to be similar to Drakes as I like the idea of it being plain overall
but with that burst of colour coming from the album cover or logo.

Jeremih
as an American R&B/hip-hop self-taught music artist. His music is similar to J.
Cole, Bryson Tiller and a bit like Drake. His promotional material all look the
same in a way that everything links together. He uses the similar purple colour
and the same image on the tour poster as well as his album cover. This way you
are able to recognise who it is, which is a good idea for my promotion.
Nature of content
The content of what is on my promotional material has to most importantly
connect to the theme and genre of what their music is. As they are a mainly R&B
band, their material needs to somehow be connected to this idea. Also, like in
Jeremihs promotional material, I want mine to have that certain house style
which the audience will be able to recognise. I think I could be able to use the
blue colour from my logo and interoperate that into my A3 poster and CD cover. I
want my material to stand out and catch eyes, especially the A3 poster as the
tour is most important coming from all of them. They want as many people as
they can have coming to the tour, so the content in the poster needs to be the
most eye catching. I would quite like to try using a tropical theme on the CD
cover, I believe palm trees will be a nice touch as the calmness of palm trees
links to their music.

Consideration of audience usage

The pixels have a target audience of mainly 14-24 year olds as theyre the age
range who are most likely to listen to the genre of music The Pixels play. Having
the target audience in mind, I have thought of what theyd be drawn to. In my
research of Rihanna, Drake and Jeremih and a few others, I have noticed that
they dont use much bright colours, but more cool, calm tones like purple, grey,
black, white, navy. This is the kind of background colour I do want, but with a hint
of the blue colour I have used in my logo, so it all connects well.

Layout design
I have to come up with some layout ideas in order to have a template. Before
coming up with some ideas, I have to research the size of a normal CD insert. I
found that the front cover of a typical CD insert is 12 x 12 cm. Its usually smaller
than the case because it needs to be able to fit within the case nicely so it
doesnt fold anywhere. The back cover of the CD insert is typically 11.75 x 15.1
cm, which is including room for the spine, as shown in the diagram below. The
spine is usually 0.6cm on each side, so I will take this away from the 15.1 cm.
On Photoshop, I have the option of creating a A3 piece of paper so itll do it for
me, but if I need to do it manually, I found that a typical A3 poster is 29.7 x 42
cm. I need to know these exact dimensions for when Im creating it on
Photoshop, there isnt any pixelated images as clear, neat images is one of the
clients main needs.

Input and manipulation of images

I have an idea of an image for the CD cover, which is an image of the leaves of
palm trees. This is my own personal image, so I can just upload it into Photoshop
and edit how I want. I think itll be good to use the image palm tree theme in the
back cover and A3 poster, just like how Rihanna and Jeremih have done, shown
below.

Also I have had to research what needs to be on the insert, so I know what else
to include on it. I have found that on the front, I need the artist name, preferably
the logo, the album title which in my case is Visions, the artwork/images I want
on it and, if needed, a Parental Advisory Explicit Content notice which Im going
to include.
On the spine, the main information I need to include is the same artist
name/logo, the album title, UPC code numbers and record label if need be. On
the back cover, the information I need to include are the song titles, any credits
such as the producers, artists, songwriters, musicians and engineers or any other
important people who helped put the album together. You also need the
publishing information with and the year and publishing company name, the
copyright notices, all rights reserved, any artwork, any social media links and a
UPC bar code with the website and contact number.

Selection of style and tone

The style of my material are all going to be a similar theme, all connected to the
genre of music The Pixels produce. Their music gives off a kind of summer/chilled
dance vibe, so the style and tone of colours I will use will be sort of cool and
basically not too in your face and jumbled up. I think some good colours to use
are a few dark colours like navy and black, but still have that block bright colour
like yellow or blue.

This is a colour palette of similar colours to the ones I want to use on each of my
materials. This has a tropical summer look to it, which is what the pixels theme
is. The blue colour is what I have used on my original logo, so I think it may work
the best as it's keeping up the colour theme. Then, as a background colour, I will
most likely use white text on a black background.
This image is what I'd like to be the main image which appears on both the
poster and the album cover. Having the same image is easily recognisable and I
think suits the style of how I want everything else to be.

Consideration of limitations and advantages of format

There are numerous things that could go wrong. One being that the computer I'm
using may crash in the middle of doing my work so I loose everything and have
to start over, meaning I may miss the deadline. To prevent this I have to save my
work every so often so if it does crash, I'm not going to loose everything I've
done.

Deadlines and schedule

Like any other project, I have a strict deadline to meet. Hopefully, this shouldn't
be a problem if I stick to my ILP. I will use my ILP and Visio timeline as a less
detailed plan of where I'm supposed to be at when creating both my poster and
my CD cover. Both of these schedules will tell me how many sessions I have left
on this project before I have to hand it in to meet the deadline. I will ensure I
meet the deadline as I will properly plan out what to do and when.

Storyboards
This is the logo I used for The Pixels. I have
designed it so there is no colour as I felt itd end
up clashing with the other colours Im going to be
using on the other graphics. I made a square grid
background which splits off in the middle there
THE PIXELS is in capitalised, slanted writing.

This is my A3 poster. I have made it so theres a

dark blue background to represent a night sky.
Theres a palm tree and the logo at the top but
the faint grid lines fill up the whole page. I have
also included the tour name and the places
along with the dates. I also have social media
and contact info at the top of the poster.

This is the front of the CD cover. I have my own

image of palm trees to use which is a sort of
night time image so theres a dark sky and the
palm trees are dark. There is the logo and album
title sort of in the top but over to the side, and a
parental advisory sticker in the bottom right.

This is the back and spine of my CD insert.

The blue from the front cover has continued
onto it along with the palm tree on the A3
poster. I have used a yellow box on the song
list because it stands out against the
background. There is also a barcode and the
text I have used is the copyright notices and
the producer names. The spine has the logo,
album name and UPC code.
