Pengertian Conjunction

A conjunction (also called a connective) is a word (such as and, because, but, for, if, or, and when)
that are used to connect phrases, clauses, and sentences.

Conjunction adalah kata atau kelompok kata yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan frasa(phrase),
klausa(clause), dan kalimat(sentence).

Conjunction merupakan salah satu parts of speech. Conjunction juga disebut connective atau
penghubung. Terdapat jenis-jenis conjunction dalam bahasa inggris: coordinate conjunction, correlative
conjunction, subordinate conjunction, dan adverbial conjunction. Berikut ini penjelasan dan contohnya.

Jenis-jenis Conjunction dan Contohnya


I. Coordinate Conjunction

Coordinate Conjunction mengabungkan item yang setara atau sama dalam suatu kalimat.
contoh: and, or, but, or, yet, so

1. I love drawing and fishing


2. You can study hard for this exam or you can fail.
3. The weather was cold but clear.
4. John plays basketball well, yet his favorite sport is badminton.
5. Doni thought he had a good chance to get the job, for his father was on the companys board of
trustees.
6. Lia is not the only athlete in his family, so are his brother, and sister.

II. Correlative Conjunction

Beberapa conjunction berpasangan dengan kata lain untuk membentuk apa yang disebut correlative
conjunction yang berfungsi untuk menunjukkan hubungan antara dua kata, phrase, atau clause.
contoh: both . . . and, not only . . . but also, not . . . but, either . . . or, neither . . . nor, whether . . . or,
as . . . as

1. Both Lia and Ana, they are good students.


2. He gets the best score not only in TOEFL but also IELTS.
3. Whether you win or lose the game, you have made your parents proud of you.
4. She is as smart as her mother.

III. Subordinate Conjunction

Subordinate Conjunction diguakan untuk menghubungkan dependent clause dengan main clause pada
suatu kalimat.
contoh: after, although, as, as if, as long as, as though, because, before, if, if only, in order that,
rather than, since, unless, until, when, whenever, where

1. She gets good score because she studied lastnight.


2. The teacher came before we finished the task.3
3. Jhon was reading a book when you knocked the door.
4. I visited the place where you met Mr. Leo.
5. She is reading while her mother is cooking.

IV. Adverbial Conjunction


The adverbial conjunctive such as however, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, as a result digunakan
untuk membuat hubungan yang kompleks antara gagasan atau ide dalam suatu paragraf.
contoh: however, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, as a result
