Definition of Terms
Sulfates are aggressive detergents made of sulfur-containing mineral salts. The most common
are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).
Buffer solution is one which resists changes in pH when small quantities of an acid or an alkali
are added to it. Buffer solution is an aqueous solution consisting of a mixture of a weak acid and
its conjugate base, or vice versa..
Spectrophotometry is a branch of spectroscopy that deals with measurement of the radiant energy
transmitted or reflected by a body as a function of the wavelength.
Calibration curve, also known as a standard curve, is a general method for determining the
concentration of a substance in an unknown sample by comparing the unknown to a set of
standard samples of known concentration.
Turbidimetry is the process of measuring the loss of intensity of transmitted light due to
the scattering effect of particles suspended in it. Light is passed through a filter creating a light of
known wavelength which is then passed through a cuvette containing a solution. A photoelectric
cell collects the light which passes through the cuvette. A measurement is then given for the
amount of absorbed light
