Maria Armijos wrote a letter to the Graduation Project Review Board at her high school about her research project on the connection between domestic abuse and animal abuse. She chose this topic because she witnessed domestic abuse in her family and is passionate about animal welfare. Through her research and interviews, she learned that there is a clear connection between domestic violence and animal cruelty, as they are both forms of power and control in abusive relationships. As part of her project, Maria volunteered at an animal shelter where she helped socialize dogs that had been abused or neglected. This experience taught her the importance of being patient and understanding with animals that have behavioral issues due to past trauma.

Dear Review Board Members:

My name is Maria B Armijos . As a student here at Harding University High School, the
Graduation Project has provided me the opportunity to learn about a topic that has always
interest me but just had not taken the time to explore in depth. I chose to research and
understand animal abuse and domestic violence . I decided to do my project on the connection
between domestic abuse and animal abuse have in common . I have personal connection with
domestic violence, as I have witness domestic abuse in my family. I wanted to learn more about
the connection , so I investigated the topic and interview multiple people on the subject I decided
to research this topic because I had always been very passionate about the wellbeing of animals
and advocate for animal cruelty as I have sheltered home less animals. Most people think that
there is no connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence however, throughout this
project I have learned that there is a definite and clear connection between this situation. I
wanted to know how I raise awareness, about the problem so I researched how the cycle of
violence affects the victims of domestic violence.
Although there are many opposing viewpoints that there is no connection between
domestic violence and animal abuse due to the lack of information about the topic, experts say
otherwise This problem should be dealt with more seriously and advocated on so people can
see the warning signs you see it all starts with one person to start the cycle and it just take one
person to endit . Most people don't find out about the problem until it's too late. This is why it's
important to know the warning signs and what to do. Animals have feeling just like we do and
unfortunately, they can't talk let us know what happening
This product was an extension of my research-based paper because I applied what I
learned while researching on the subject and volunteering at my local animal shelter not only that
I interviewed one many volunteers and got to talk to them about their experience working with
several different types animal coming from all type of bad situation but many were just given
due to the fact that they couldn't care for the animal any more. The animals that I encountered
throughout my visit were very shy sometimes abused animal, The group that i was working with
was in charge of cleaning after this dog and socializing them, so they could be adobatle I
lessened that was much more easier said than done because most of this dog did not want
anything to do with human
Due to our efforts, I was able to resocial dog with human again by volunteering two day
a week for one hour, However I would have loved to been able to advocate more to the public
about this subject This experience has Taught me to be more patience and understanding of
animals that have behaviour issues because of their past or a traumatic incident that has happen
Thank you very much for taking time out to meet with me and discuss my topic. I hope
you enjoyed my presentation and i hope that I taught you guys something you guys probably
didn't know that was going on or had no correlation with each other Thanks once again for your
time and interest, it was greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Maria Belen Armijos
