Personal Insight Questions

1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively

influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.

A leadership experience that i have participated in and resulted in with a positive

influence for others was helping those in need. I was able to volunteer, to help those that are

economically unstable, at my local teen center. Though it was something small, it helped provide

some everyday necessities to those that can't afford it. What this experience offered to me was a

view of how something so small can make or brighten someones day. It also created a desire to

help those in need. Giving back to the community is a rewarding feeling when you see how

happy and grateful they become when they receive even the smallest kind of donations. The

reason I decided to volunteer was to offer to those that aren't as fortunate, I have endless amounts

of blessings that I dont realize I have and I take them for granted, so being able to donate is an

eye opener for everyone that forgets what they have been blessed with.

6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this

interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

An academic subject that inspires me, to do more, is math. Ever since I was younger,

math has always been the class that I, almost, never struggle in. The reason why I have grown

interest in this class is because no matter how bad someone is at math it always has a solution.

My interest in math grew when I entered high school, my freshmen year I took Algebra 1, I did

well in the class and had almost no struggle to learn the material. With my interest that has

grown I decided to participate in Pre-Calculus class that is college level and is instructed with the

help of a college professor. The class was offered to me and i saw it as an opportunity to have a

small glance of how rigorous a class can be in college.

4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to

overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

An educational opportunity Ive been given is joining Avid. In the beginning I was

skeptical about joining but I am glad I did. Avid has allowed me to gain more knowledge on

college. In the beginning of this school year I had walked into school knowing very little about

scholarships and of 4 year universities. AVID has also helped me with my organization skills.

Knowing where all my assignments and class notes are, is very helpful when it comes to

studying for tests. The interactions we do with our notes each week has helped me memorize my

notes better and adding that second layer helps with understanding the topic more.

This class helped me overcome the obstacle of being the first person in my family to go

to college, because I am the first one, I didnt have anyone that could give me tips. It helped me

overcome that obstacle because it has taught me a lot about applications and graduation

requirements. Taking AVID has also given me the opportunity to become more social and

learning how to work with different types of peers.

8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you

stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?

One thing that sets me apart from other students in california, is my desire to strive for

myself and for my family. Knowing that I can provide for my parents is something that motivates

me to do better in school. To understand me better, I am someone who puts others needs before my

own, which can sometimes have bad results for me, I make sure to help those that show that they

need help in something even if I have problems of my own. I believe that I belong on a UC campus

because I have the desire to become the first one in my family to finish my education at a four year

university and I want to add on to those Latinos that prove the dedication and desire is the only

requirement to have a successful education.

A challenge that may get in the way is coming from a household where I would be the

first to attend college. This can be a challenge because I do not have an example of what to do and

what not to do. I know that with the help provided by school I have a chance at going to the UC ive

wanted, but having no one in my family to guide me will be an obstacle that I may encounter along

the way.
