Portfolio (10%):

Year Start Self Evaluation


Written reflection (2-3 paragraphs each):
o About Me
as a person
as an English language learner
o Listening
My skills, my goals, my improvements
o Speaking
My skills, my goals, my improvements
o Reading
My skills, my goals, my improvements
o Writing
My skills, my goals, my improvements
2 writing samples: 1 before and1 after (before could be from the start of this class,
another class, or last year)
o 2 paragraphs of analysis of improvements
1 project from another class that you are proud of
o 2 paragraphs of why this piece is a good vision of your skills
2 paragraphs of future goals

Formal Writing Assessment (7.5%):

Paragraph format
o Minimum 5 paragraphs
o Does not have to be essay format, but does have to have proper organization
(e.g. topic sentences, etc.)
In-class on CFD
o Hand-written in class
o No cheat sheets
o Must stay in class until 11:00
On culture
o What does culture mean to you?
o Comparing Canadian culture to your native culture
o Why is culture fascinating / what fascinates you about culture?
o New findings of culture from class
Half of final mark (15/2 = 7.5%)

Formal Speaking Assessment (7.5%):

Pre-recorded video (3-5 minutes)


Purpose:
o Speech
o 1-sided debate
o selling a product or idea
Part of final
o Half of final mark (15/2 = 7.5%)
Body language is also assessed
