10.6 - Serial Analog-Digital Converters: Serial Adcs Typically Require 2 Types: - Single-Slope - Dual-Slope

Serial ADCs typically require 2NT for conversion where T is the clock period. The document discusses single-slope and dual-slope ADCs, their block diagrams, operations, attributes and conversion times.

DUAL-SLOPE ADC
Block diagram: Waveforms:

Operation:
1.) Initially vint = 0 and vin is sampled and held (vIN* > 0).
2.) Reset the positive integrator by integrating a positive voltage (not shown) until vint (0) = Vth..
3.) Integrate vin* for NREF clock cycles to get,
NREFT
vint(t1) = K

vin* dt + vint(0) = KNREFTvin* + Vth
0
4.) At the end of NREF counts, the carry output of the counter is applied to switch 2 and-VREF. is applied to
the positive integrator. The output of the integrator decreases until vint(t) = Vth at t = t1+t2. Thus,
NoutT
vint(t1+t2) = vint(t1) + K
t1
(VREF) dt =Vth KNREFTvin* + Vth - KNoutTVREF = Vth

vin*
5.) Solving for Nout gives, Nout = NREF
VREF

Comments: Conversion time = 2(2N)T and the operation is independent of Vth and K.
