Teacher: Daniela Subject: The Way We See Things Year 5 Term 1 Week 6

This document outlines a science unit for Year 5 students about transparent, translucent, and opaque materials. Over two weeks, students will explore how different materials interact with light by investigating their properties, classifying sample materials, answering questions, and conducting investigations on shadow casting. The objectives are for students to understand how materials can block or transmit light and to link a material's properties to its ability to form shadows. Hands-on activities include sorting materials and designing sunshades.

variable. other substances block light

-define opaque, translucent and transparent materials

-investigate the properties of materials to classify them as

opaque, translucent and transparent

The teacher will write down 2 properties of light, list

three opaque and transparent objects, the students will
identify them in given pictures.

The students will answer the following questions: why is it

important that some materials are opaque, what can the
person see through the translucent material, do
transparent materials block the light, why is it important
that not all of the materials we use are opaque.

Investigation: the aim of investigation is to explore which

materials are opaque, transparent or translucent. Students
will work in small groups and sort translucent, opaque and
transparent materials.

The big idea We can link the property of a material with

how good it is at making shadows.

The key teaching points for students in this unit are to :

- Recognise that the property of a material
determines how good it is at making shadows
- Describe the shadows made by opaque and
translucent materials
- Understand that the use of a material is related to
its properties

The teacher will ask the questions: Where have you seen a
shadow like this before, which part of the window makes
the best shadow, why does the glass not make a good
shadow. The students will investigate which materials will
cast shadows; they will need a selection of opaque,
translucent and transparent objects, a light source, a
screen or a white wall. The aim of this investigation is to
test which materials cast shadows. The students will
investigate sunshades; they will need a light source, a
selection of materials, such as paper, cardboard, clears
plastic files, aluminium foil, metal plate, a wooden board
and a plastic sheet. The aim of the investigation is to allow
students to apply their knowledge of materials and the
shadows they cast by designing a sunshade.
