Arithmetic Sequence EW (1) - 2

This document contains 6 arithmetic sequence word problems asking the reader to: find the 12th term and sum of the first 12 terms given the 1st and 4th terms; use algebra to find how many terms are needed to reach a sum of 208 given the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd terms; find the sum of the first 10 terms given the 3rd term is 4 times the 1st and the 6th term is 17; find the sum of the first 20 terms in terms of the 1st and 2nd terms; find the sum of the 12th, 13th, and 14th terms given a formula for the sum of the first n terms; and find an expression for the (m+n)

Arithmetic Sequence Extra Work

Answer the following

1. An arithmetic sequence has first term 11 and fourth term 20. Find (a) the twelfth term
and (b) the sum of the first twelve terms.

2. An arithmetic sequence starts 12, 16, 20. Use algebra to find how many terms need
to be added to give a sum of 208?

3. In an arithmetic sequence, the third term is four times the first term and the sixth
term is 17. Find the sum of the first ten terms.

4. An arithmetic sequence has first two terms a and b. Find the sum of the first 20
terms, giving your answer in terms of a and b.

5. The sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence is n(2n + 3). Find the sum of
the 12th, 13th and 14th term.

6. The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is m and the mth term is n, where m and n
are distinct positive integers. Find the (m + n)th term in terms of m and n, simplifying
your answer as far as possible.
