Introduction:
(i) Background of the client/situation
Balqis is a Year 4 pupil from SK Damansara Utama, an urban primary
school. She has just transferred from SK Ulu Lembah, a rural school three
months ago. In her old school, she was a cheerful, friendly and
hardworking girl. She did well in her studies in the school and had a lot
of friends.
However, in SK Damansara Utama, she is so different. She is very
quiet and always alone in the class. Besides, she seems to not able to fit
into her current classroom. Her classmates isolate her especially during
group work. They do not want her to be in their group.
Miss Yong, her class teacher realizes that Balqis has no friends in
the classroom. She tries to ask Balqis about her problem but she says
nothing. In order to help Balqis, Miss Yong refers her to the school counselor
for a counseling session.
Problem: She has a low-self esteem and do not have friends in the
classroom.
Intervention therapy: Person-centered theory, art therapy and storytelling
therapy
Step 1: Building rapport
Balqis :Good morning. May I come in?
Counselor :Good morning. Yes, please. Are you Balqis?
Balqis :Yes, I am.
Counselor :Nice to meet you, Balqis. Come and take a seat.
Balqis :(nodding her head and sit down)
Counselor :Which class are you from?
Balqis :I am from 4 Kenanga.
Counselor :Oh! I see. I think this is the first time you come here, right? By the
way, I am Miss Lim.
Balqis :(still looking down)
Counselor :Have you taken your break, Balqis?
Balqis :Hmm... N..o.. (shaking her head)
Counselor :I have tea and some biscuits here. Do you want some?

Balqis :Hmmm. (nodding her head, slightly smiling)
Counselor :(counselor serves the tea for them) Would you prefer the
chocolate biscuits or the butter biscuits?
Balqis :(looking blankly)
Counselor :If you love chocolate, the chocolate biscuits will suit you the best.
But if you love to eat butter, then I suggest you to try the butter
biscuits.
Balqis :I lo..ve..cho..co..late biscuits.
Counselor :Me too. I also love chocolate biscuits. There you go. (Passing a
packet of chocolate biscuits)
Balqis :Tha..nk you Miss.
Couselor :You are welcome.I love eating chocolate biscuits while reading
books. It is one of my hobbies. So, what is your hobby, Balqis?
Balqis :I like drawing.
Counselor :Oh! I see. What kind of picture you usually prefer to draw?
Balqis :I love to draw the paddy field in my village.
Counselor : So you love to be at the paddy field in your village?
Balqis : Yes, my friends and I used to play there.
Counselor :Okay. Before we go any further, I just want to know if you are
comfortable right now?
Balqis :Yes.
Step 2: Establishing structure
Counselor :Balqis, this will be our first session because it is the first time you
come and meet me. If there are more things to be discussed, we
will have to meet in another sessions. Is it okay with you, Balqis?
Balqis :Okay.
Counselor :Each session will take about 30 minutes. We will meet in this
counseling room every Tuesday after your break time. Since I do
have many students coming to meet me, please be punctual,
okay.
Balqis :(nodding her head)
Step 3: Explaining confidentiality
Counselor :hmmmI also want you to know that anything that you say is
going to be a secret between two of us. I would not tell anyone

unless you try to hurt or harm yourself, your friends and other
people. Only then I will tell your parents and the headmaster.
Balqis : (Frowning and scared). You want to tell my mother and father.
(alarming tone)
Counselor :No. Unless you try to hurt yourself or other people. The reason I
tell your parents or the headmaster is not to harm you. But it is for
your own good and safety.
Balqis : hmmm Ok.ay. (feeling more secure).
Counselor :Balqis, Dont be shy with me. feel free to say or ask anything you
want to. Anything that you will tell me is going to be a secret.
Dont worry, you can trust me. Is it okay?
Balqis : Yes.
Step 4: Defining the problem
Counselor :Good (smiling), do you know why are you here?
Balqis :(shrugging her shoulder) (reluctant to talk)
Counselor :Do you have something to share with me?
Balqis :No. Everything is okay.
Counselor :Do you have something in mind that you really want to do, right
now?
Balqis :No. (looking down and fidgeting)
Counselor :How about drawing? You like drawing, right?
Balqis :Yes. (quickly nodding her head and smiling)
Counselor :Do you want to draw right now? If yes, I can get you a paper and
colour pencils? (take out a piece of paper and a box of colour
pencil)
Balqis :So, can I draw now?
Counselor :Indeed. You can draw anything you want. ( smiling to reassure
her)
Balqis :Hmm...what should I draw?
Counselor :Anything that is familiar to you such as family and friends. You
can also draw your house and your school.
Balqis :(start to doodle on the paper)
Counselor :Wow! You are good in drawing.
Balqis :hmm.. smiling proudly.

Counselor :Emm.. There are a lot of chairs and table.
Balqis :Yes. I am drawing my class.
Counselor :You are drawing your class (restating). How about drawing your
friends in the class.
Balqis :(hesitated for a while). Hmm-mm.. (start drawing the friends in
the class). I dont feel like drawing them.
Counselor :Hmmm
Balqis :(choosing blue colour to colour the friends)
Counselor :Why do you choose blue colour?
Balqis :I feel sad and lonely.
Counselor :You feel sad and lonely in the class.
Balqis :hmm-mm.
Counselor :Can you tell me something about your class?
Balqis :hm-mm. Nothing has happened (try to hide the problem and
continue to scribble.
Counselor :There is girl at the corner of the classroom? Who is she?
Balqis :Me. (sad tone)
Counselor :Can you tell me why are you sitting at the corner?
Balqis :Because nobody wants to sit beside me. They do not want to
friend me.
Counselor : Hmmm. (nodding) [minimal prompt] You know It is okay to sit
at corner of the class as long as you can follow the lesson..
[normalization]
Balqis :(nodding and continue to draw horns on her classmates heads.)
Counselor :It looks like horns on their head, isnt it?
Balqis :Yes, they are horns. (looking at the counselor face for a while)
Counselor :Why did you draw the horns?
Balqis :Because they are bad. They always call me village girl and I
dont like them.
Counselor :Your classmates always call you village girl. Hmmm-mmm.
Balqis :I feel verysad. Because because I do not like to be call
village girl.
Counselor :Okay. You say your classmates are bad because they call you
village girl and do not want to friend with you. You feel sad and

lonely. [summarizing]
Balqis : Yes. (nodding her head)
Step 5: Finding out clients expectation (Goal setting)
Counselor : Hmmm Balqis, what do you wish you could have?
Balqis : I want to have friends. I want to play together with them.
Counselor :You knowThere must be a reason why they do not want to be
friend with you. Can you tell me more?
Balqis :They always say that I am stupid and lazy because I am from
village.
Counselor :Okay.. What do you think about your friends comment about you?
Balqis :I think I am not stupid and lazy. I scored the highest mark in all
the subjects at my old school.
Counselor : hmm Wow! I am proud of you.
Balqis : (smiling widely) Thank you.
Counselor : Okay, you say that you want to have friends and you wish you
can play with them, right?
Balqis :Yes.
Step 6: Exploring/ Examining the issue in more depth in order to solve it
Counselor : Okay, do you remember you tell me you used to be called village
girl?
Balqis: : Yes.
Counselor : Can I know when they start calling you this name?
Balqis : It happens on the first day.
Counselor :So what happened on the first day? Can you tell me more?
Balqis :I was standing in front of the class and about to introduce myself.
After I said that I am from village, everyone started to laugh.
Counselor :Ohh, that is horrible.
Balqis :Ya. As I sat on the empty seat beside a girl, she quickly dragged
her chair away from me.
Counselor :Hmm-mm, okay.
Balqis :She clearly shows that she does not like me.
Counselor : How about others in the class?
Balqis : There was one time when I was in the canteen, suddenly, one of
the boys from the class pointed at me and said to his friend

beside him thats the new student in my class. She must be
stupid and lazy because she is from a village.
Counselor : Its seemed like they have the same reason for treating you like
that.
Balqis :Yes.
Counselor :What do you think you can do to change their attitude towards
you?
Balqis :I am not sure but I would like to know how.

Counselor : I like your determination. I have a storybook that may offer you
some idea. Do you want to read that storybook?
Balqis :Yes. I like reading storybook.
Counselor :Thats great. The title of the story is The Ugly Duckling and her
friends. Have you read the story before?
Balqis : (smile) No. I think I like the title of the story.
Counselor :(give the story book to her.) You can start to read the story now.
Balqis : (read the story aloud) Once upon a time, there lived a Mummy
Duck in a farm. In her nest, she had five little eggs and one big
egg. One day, the five little eggs started to crack. Tap, tap, tap!
Five pretty, yellow baby ducklings came out.
Counselor : (nodding her head)
Balqis : (continue reading the story) Then the big egg started to crack.
Bang, bang, bang! One big, ugly duckling came out. Thats
strange, thought Mummy Duck. Nobody wanted to play with her.
Go away, said her brothers and sisters. Youre ugly!
Counselor : What happened to the ugly duckling?
Balqis : No one wanted to play with her because she was ugly.
Counselor : What do you think will happen to her?
Balqis : How about I continue reading the story? (smiling/ showing her
interest)
Counselor : Yes, of course.
Balqis : The ugly duckling was sad. So he went to find some new
friends.
Go away, you ugly duckling! said the puppy.

Go away, you ugly duckling! said the kitten.
Go away, you ugly duckling! said the chick.
Go away, you ugly duckling! said the calf.
No one wanted to be his friend. The ugly duckling found an empty
barn and lived there. He was cold, sad and alone.
Counselor :It seems that no one wants to friend with her, right?
Balqis : (Nodding her head)
Counselor :What was the feeling of the ugly duckling?
Balqis :She is sad and lonely just like me.
Counselor :Hmm-mm.
Balqis :One day, it started to rain heavily. Soon, there will be a flood. The
ugly duckling was preparing to move to a higher place. Suddenly,
she heard a cry Help! Help! Help me! She saw the puppy that
making fun of her was nearly drown in the river. She quickly
jumped into the river to save the puppy. The puppy was very
grateful to the ugly duckling for saving him.
Counselor :What happened to the ugly duckling now?
Balqis :The ugly duckling saved the puppy from drowning.
Counselor :Is it a good thing?
Balqis :Yes. Because she helps others. (continue reading) After the
incident, the ugly duckling went back to the farm. Mother Duck
asked, Where have you been? I am so proud of you. They dont
want to be your friends but you still help them. The ugly duckling
answered, It does not matter what other people say about me.
As long as I help others in need, I believe something good will
happen to me.
Counselor :Can you tell how the story ends?
Balqis :At the end, the ugly duckling returned to her mother. She did not
mind others calling her ugly as long as she tried her best and did
the right things.
Counselor : Yes, good.
Step 7: Obtaining the Clients decision to solve his/her problem
Counselor :You have read the book, right? Do you get any idea how to
change your friends attitude towards you.

Balqis : I think I can try my best to show them I am not stupid.
Counselor : What do you think you can do?
Balqis : I can try to score in my coming exams.
Counselor : Okay, you want to do your best in your exam to show that you
are not stupid.
Balqis : Hmm.. mmm..
Counselor :Thats good. I am happy to hear your decisions. Is there any
other things you can do?
Balqis : Like the ugly duckling, I will try to help them if they need my
help.
Counselor : Okay. I think you know what you should do now.
Balqis : Ermmm (smiling widely)
Counselor : I hope that you will do what you say to me. I dont want you to
just saying it here.
Balqis : I promise I will do what I say.
Step 8: Closing the counseling session
Counselor :We have come to the end of this session.In this session, we had
discussed a few things. At first, you feel sad and lonely because
you do not have any friends. Your classmates call you village girl
and do not want to go near you.
Balqis : Yes.
Counselor :Your classmates also show that they do not like you even in the
canteen.
Balqis : (nodding her head)
Counselor : Okay, you have decided what to do to handle this situation.
Balqis : Yes.
Counselor :So, I would like to see you next Tuesday in this room at 10.30am
to see how you are doing. Is it fine with you?
Balqis : Yes, Miss Lim. Thank you. Bye.
Counselor : Bye and see you next week, Balqis.
