The Donahue family will enjoy a serene and tranquil space with Art
Nouveau influences. Jenny having a hectic career and her son being
autistic they need a space with a calm and relaxing environment. Using a
complementary color scheme through the space with different shades of
purples, creams, and greens will create a harmonious feel. A cream
colored modern storage space with open shelving will display Jennys
medals. Different materials like Copper accessories and fixtures, granite
counter tops, wood floors, comfy velvet couches and chairs will be used
to adorn the space. This will definitely be their home sweet home.

moss like shown in my Inspiration
piece will make the space a
welcoming environment.

Accessory and Art Justification
The designer has chosen these pieces because the client wants an art nouveau
style in the home. Jenny loves jogging on the trails in her neighborhood so the
designer incorporated a nature motif with floral prints and greenery. Mirrored
objects are throughout the home to reflect more light making the space feel large
and open. The art and accessory pieces for this home fits the criteria and look she
is going after with the curved lines, antique pieces, and pops of color throughout
the space.

INTA 212: CODES ANALYSIS CHART COMPLETED BY: Alyson & Sarah
CODES ANALYSIS/UPDATES
International Existing Building Code:
Rationalize why or why not the existing building should be
List the code in this column
expected to conform to the code
402.5 & 403.10 - Smoke Alarms in Existing Builidngs For the safety of all indiviuals who reside in the building, all new
Fire and Life sleeping area must have a new smoke detector installed.
Safety
405.1.2 & 405.1.3 & 405.1.4 - Fire Escapes In case of a fire, all existing escapes can be used. The codes on
the existing stairwalls and exterior escapes are the way to help
the residents evacuate safely incase of an emergancy.
805.5.2 - Transoms In order to protect the spread of fire in multi-story buildings, the
proper material in door ways must be used. The codes state, the
door openings shall be 1/4" glass or have metal frames. This
allows the residents to evacuate through the door without it
collapsing.
804.2 Auto Sprinklers For builidings of 30 people or more, including multi-story, multi-
purpose builidings, auto-sprinklers must be installed for the
safety of all the indivduals inside.
403.3 & 403.3.1 Carry Gravity Load In interior design, multi-story buildings may not increase their
Building gravity load by 5%. In the case that interior walls exceed the 5%
Elements gravity load, additional walls below must be able to compensate
and for the added weight. All plans must be presented to the building
Materials inspector to evaluate.
805.3 Means of Egress ( Number of Exists) The amount of people in the building and the number of escapes
are escental. With the increase of people using the space, the
amount of exists increase. This allows for the safety of the
residents to leave the area as fast as they can to prevent injury.
46
805.3.1.1 & 803.1.2 Fire Escapes When working on the design, the designer must keep in mind the
amount of escapes as well as the location of the escapes. Each
room that is created must have an unobstructed access to the
escape. This includes windows and other fire escapes. It also
includes rooms that do not have the means to lock. If there is a
room without a window, a clear path must be created to allow
for escaping incase of an emergency.
808.3.1 Enclosed areas All enclosed areas other than closets, kitchens, basements,
garages, hallways, laundry areas, utility areas, storage areas and
Electrical bathrooms shall have a minimum of 2 duplex receptacle outlets
or one duplex receptacle outlet and one ceiling or wall-type
lighting outlet.
808.3.3 Laundry Areas Since this is a requirement of the client, laundry rooms requires
one duplex
receptacle outlet near the appliances and on an independent
circuit.
808.3.5 Minimum Lighting Outlets At least one lighting outlet shall be provided in every bathroom,
hallway, stairway, attached garage and detached garage with
electric power and to illuminate outdoor entrances and exits.
This is also a safety concern for any emergencies.
Energy 811.1 Minimum Requirements (Energy Alterations to the existing building can be energy efficient without
Conservatio Conservation) having to update the existing structures.
n
Appliances Install all appliances with energy efficient appliances.
Replace fixtures. Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most frequently used
rooms in the home, so you should optimize the energy efficiency
of these areas.

W3A2 INTA212: CODE ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION TOPICS
MICHELLE KIRKPATRICK
MAY 27, 2017
Codes in residential design help save and protect the individuals residing in the space and the
codes in place are enforced for a reason. There are multiple types of codes for different areas of the
structure, which include fire and life safety, building elements and materials, electrical codes, and codes
for energy conservation. All of these codes help the individuals safety in their living space and set rules
for designers to follow.
Fire and life safety are very important codes for a designer to follow. Examples of fire and safety
codes would be sprinklers, alarms and fire escapes. These codes are in place for the well-being of the
people who reside in the area. The codes are a way to make sure the safety responsive teams have the
same information of the building in general. It is the responsibility of the designer to ensure the codes
are followed. The designer is to make sure all escape routes are unobstructed, emergency escape routes
and equipment is placed in ordinance with the codes. (" 2015 International Existing Building Code " )
Building codes also align with fire and safety codes. It is essential that as a designer each room
has a window for escape on a multiple story building. All rooms that do not have a window, must have a
clear, obstacle free escape according to code 805.3.1.1 in the 2015 international Existing Building Codes.
Sleeping areas must obtain a smoke detector that meets the heat to raise ratio that is certified. This
helps alert the residents to prepare to escape in a timely fashion from the building.
According to code 804.2 in buildings serving multiple tenants over 30, the building must come
equipped with proper sprinkler systems on all floors. (" Chapter 8. Special Rooms and Spaces) While
having multiple people in an area, the sprinklers allow for proper escape with the extra protection of a
fire from spreading until the fire and safety crews can arrive. Moving large amounts of people through
an exit would take longer than areas with fewer tenants.

This exercise was very beneficial for me because I was able to see the actual
size of the room and whether the furniture was proportionate to the size of the
room. I noticed all the furniture is on the right side of the room, to my defense
the bathroom door and closet door are on the left side taking up all the wall
space but I could add some night stands on both sides of the bed to make it
more symmetrical. The dresser and bed posts are the same height and give
the room a visual appeasing look. Scale is very important, you wouldnt want
the furniture too large as that would make getting around difficult and would
make the room look smaller than it is. The most dominant form I see is a
rectangular and subdominant is a cube.

Justification of Solution
As a designer, listening to the client about their wants and needs in the
space is one of the most crucial things that is done. My client Jenny needed an
open spaced, 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with a lot of storage, an office, a craft
space and a custom piece for her marathon medals. Researching and
brainstorming the style she was going for, Art Nouveau which is a style from the
1890's is eclectic design with organic and geometric forms. I decided to
incorporate natural elements and soothing colors throughout the space because
of Jenny's hectic lifestyle working in the ER, her son being autistic, and her love
for the running trails in her neighborhood. All throughout the space are unique
pieces from the furniture to the art, lighting and accessories that create a
cohesiveness and comfortable home.
Examining and drawing out the floor plan gave me a lot of insight on how
the design would come together. I noticed that all the space wasn't being used
to its full potential and could still use some work with adding closets, enlarging
the bedrooms, and improving my cad skills with the doors. I was able to move a
few doors to create more of a wall to put a potted plant or some artwork
instead of opening the door with a wall too close to a door.
Reflection
This class has taught me a lot of great information to further my career in
Interior Design. It was very beneficial to see the design project come together.
The real life situation of visualizing the client's space and then putting it all out
on paper for others to see creates a real understanding of what residential
design is all about; not only is it about aesthetics and spacial planning, but
knowledge of safety codes is very important when designing a space for clients.
The portfolio is one of the best marketing tools this class has taught me.
Future employers are going to want to see what you know and view examples of
your work a portfolio will definitely showcase that.
