Large Bore RTAType Engines

Recently we had reports about some isolated cases of broken bolts holding the spraying plate
for the piston cooling of RTA type engines.
The distance between the end of the bolts holding the spraying plate and the thread end is rather
small. In case of deviation from the allowed tolerances or improper cutting of the depth of the
threads, it might occur in exceptional circumstances that the bolts lie pressed against the roots
of the threads. This could hinder the spraying plate from being clamped down properly and
occasionally result in cracks of the bolts during operation.
Incidents like that cannot only cause damage to the spraying plate itself, but also to the
components in the surroundings and may in addition also restrict the efficiency of the piston
cooling. A loose spraying plate causes a lower cooling oil outlet temperature if compared to the
other units.
The following engine types are affected by this:
Design Engine Types
RTA48T and RTA58T
Spraying plate fitted
RTA48TB, RTA58TB and RTA68B (former RTA68TB)
with Standard Bolts 8.8
RTflex58TB
RTA84T, RTA84TB and RTA84TD
Spraying plate fitted
RTA96C and RTA96CB
with Waisted Bolts 8.8
RTflex96CB
As a precautionary safety measure, the bolts have to be shortened to exclude the possibility that
they touch the roots of the threads.
The same could occur on RTA84T, RTA84TB and RTA84TD engines for fastening the piston
skirt. The bolts concerned have also to be shortened.
Design Engine Types
Piston skirt fitted with RTA84T
Standard Bolts 8.8 RTA84TB and RTA84TD
We strongly recommend to shorten the existing bolts or even exchange them with bolts of new
defined length.
Shorter bolts to
be fitted during
the next piston
overhaul.
The bolts for the piston skirt have also been newly designed. In the Table B below the length of
the new, shorter bolts and the tightening instruction can be found. The lubricant specified with
the tightening instruction is oil.
