Our Daily Greeting:

Titshala: Molweni bafundi (Hello students)


Abafundi: Molo titshala (Hello teacher)
Titshala: Ninjani bafundi? (How are you?)
Abafundi: Siphilile enkosi. Unjani wena? (We
are fine thanks. And how are you?)
Titshala: Nam ndiphilile enkosi. (I am fine
too, thank you.)

After the lesson:

Titshala: Enkosi bafundi. Hambani kakuhle.


Abafundi: Sala kakuhle titshala.
Oonoqhakancu: The Click sounds

The three main click sounds in isiXhosa are: Q, C, X

1. The Palatal Click: Q

You place the tip or blade of the tongue on the


palate (roof of the mouth) and move it away
instantly. This produces a sound resembling the
popping of a cork from a bottle.

Example word: Iqaqa (a polecat / a skunk)

2. The Lateral Click: X

You move the side(s) of the tongue away from the


lateral teeth ridge and the tip of the tongue
maintains contact with the alveolar ridge. The
resulting sound is the X- (Horse trotting).

Example word: Ixoxo (giant frog / bull frog)

3. The Dental Click: C

Place the tip and blade of the tongue behind the top
front teeth, with the lower teeth holding the tongue
slightly. The resulting sound is the: C (as in the
watch / clock)

Iqaqa liziqikaqika kuqaqaqa. Liqale


ngokuqhaqha uqhoqhoqho wegqaza.
(a skunk / polecat rolls itself on the turf after
tearing the tinky bird`s throat).

Isicwicwicwi sicoca icici ecaleni kwechibi.


(a fancy lady cleans her earring near the dam).

Ixoxo noxam baxabene ngenxa yomxhaxha


nomxoxozi.
(a frog and a lizard are fighting over porridge
and pumpkin).

Tongue twister: To be done in
