Course Title: Medical Terminology Online 501-101

Course Description: Medical Terminology Online 501-101 focuses on mastering the


component parts of medical terms. By understanding the definition of prefixes, suffixes and
word roots, the learner is guided through the formation, analysis and construction of
terms. Emphasis is on spelling, defining and pronouncing medical terms, as they relate to body
systems. Besides studying the anatomical body systems, the students is introduced to
operative, diagnostic, therapeutic, symptomatic and surgical terminology related to those
systems. The course employs the Programmed Learning format, using the textbook as the
primary sequencing guide. The completion of this course will also provide students with
three (3) college credits from Mid-State Technical College (MSTC)

Fall 2016 Course Timeline: September 1, 2016 to January 12, 2017 - All course work must
be completed and submitted to the online instructor by January 19, 2017 (no exceptions,
no extensions for MSTC credit)

Spring 2017 Course Timeline: January 2, 2017 to May 15, 2017 - All course work must be
completed and submitted to the online instructor by May 22, 2017 (no exceptions, no
extensions for MSTC credit)

Required Textbook: BUILDING A MEDICAL VOCABULARY, Author: LEONARD, Publisher:


ELSEVIER, Edition: 9TH.; Author: Peggy C. Leonard. ISBN Number: 9781455772681. (You
must have your text by the first day of class). Note: If you have the 8th edition, you wont
find too many differences between them, so using the 8th edition will be fine.

Publisher: ELSEVIER, Edition: 9TH Approximate cost: $75 plus S/H

Each student is expected to buy his/her own textbook. Since this is a workbook text, you may
not use someone else's textbook. Filling in all exercises and reviews, not to mention
highlighting important terms as you read, are an important part of learning medical
terms. Students will be required to know the word parts in the green shaded boxes. Students
should review the PowerPoint presentations to enhance learning and use the web-based audio
resources to assist in learning pronunciation. The tests will be taken from the textbook
content.

front cover.

Course Objective and Competencies:

Medical Terminology Online 501-101 is designed to give the student the foundational rules on
how to build, define, pronounce and spell medical words and word parts. Learners will be
expected to complete all components of the online course and attain a minimum grade of an
80%. Upon completion of Medical Terminology Online, the learner should be able to:

Apply the rules of medical language


Identify medical terms related to the body as a whole
Interpret medical terms related to the lymph and immune systems
Interpret medical terms related to the integumentary system
Interpret terms related to the male reproductive system
Interpret terms related to the blood
Interpret terms related to the sensory system
Interpret terms related to the musculoskeletal system
Interpret terms related to the respiratory system
Interpret terms related to the digestive system
Interpret terms related to the nervous system
Interpret terms related to the endocrine system
Interpret terms related to the urinary system
Interpret terms to the cardiovascular system

Grading Scale and Scoring Guide:

The Service and Health Division of Mid-State technical College has adopted a standard grading
scale for programs within the division as follows:

A: 95-100% A-: 93-94% B+: 91-92% B: 87-90% B-: 85-86% C+: 83-84%

C: 80-82% C-: 79% D+: 78% D: 77% D-: 76% F: below 76%

IMPORTANT: Your final grade will become part of a permanent GPA average on your MSTC
record. Most health programs at MSTC also require a minimum 80% in order to be successful.
Failure to achieve 80% may limit your ability to progress in your chosen program/graduate.
Always check with your class advisor so you know your program expectations. Frequently check
your grade summary within your course to know your ongoing average. This course uses the
BrainHoney gradebook.

Grading Information

Grades are determined by total points earned divided by 1100 total point available. The point
distribution for this course consists of the following:

Learning Path Exams: 7 Learning Path exams at 100 points each for a total of 700
points.
Final Exam worth 200 points
Learning Plan Six: Practice Chart Interpretation Assignment worth 100 points
Learning Path Eight: Pronunciation Assignment worth 100 points

2016-17 Cost, Enrollment and Completion Dates for Dual Credit Options through Mid-
State Technical College (MSTC):

These courses have a specific start period and a specific end date for dual credit. This is
a ONE semester course cost of $325. To receive MSTC 3 credits, the student must enroll in
and complete the full semester Total cost for the course is $325, plus the cost of the
textbook. Ordering the textbook is the local districts responsibility. There is no additional cost
for the 3 college credits.
Registration for the Medical Terminology Online 501-101 course is:

Fall September 1 - September 15, 2016 (no late registrations accepted, no extensions).
IMPORTANT: Starting the course on September 1st provides the student with 20 weeks to
complete the course.

Spring December 19 January 9, 2017 (no late registrations accepted, no extensions).


IMPORTANT: Starting the course on January 2nd provides the student with 20 weeks to
complete the course.

Process for Dual Enrollment:

1. The student is enrolled by their local district for Medical Terminology Online 501-101 at
the WVS Enrollment site.
2. The local district is responsible for the $325 per semester course fee which includes the
MSTC three college credits upon successful completion.
3. Once enrolled, the WVS Online Instructor will coordinate the enrollment registration with
MSTC.
4. The student must complete the entire Fall semester course by January 12, 2017.
5. The student must complete the entire Spring semester course by May 22, 2017 for
Spring semester. There are no extensions and no exceptions allowed for dual college
credit for this course.
6. NOTE: This course has a 28 day no fee/no credit drop period applied to this
courses. It is recommended that the student does not register for course for the MSTC
credits if they are unsure of completing the course. After the 28 day drop period the
course is on their permanent MSTC transcript.
7. Once the student completes the course, the WVS instructor will post the grade on the
MSTC system. The student can request transcript directly from MSTC as needed.
