Quiz1 Solution

This document contains the solution to a quiz question involving the analysis of a composite beam under different loading conditions. The beam has steel bars embedded in a concrete section, and the problem involves calculating stresses in the materials under: 1) Compression loading only, 2) Increased temperature of 200°C, and 3) Decreased temperature of -200°C. For each case, the document calculates the forces and stresses in the concrete and steel using their material properties and coefficients of thermal expansion.

QUIZ 1

Q. 1

c = 15*10 -6 s = 5*10 -6
EC = 20 GPa ES = 200 GPa
T = 200C L = 1000 mm

P = 100 kN

100 mm

100 mm

STEEL BARS 4 Nos. Diameter = 10mm

SOLUTION

Case 1: Only 100kN compression load is acting

Area of steel = As = 4 * ( /4) * 102 =314.16 mm2

Area of concrete = Ac = 100* 100 As
= 10000 314.16 = 9685.84 mm2

Stiffness:
Kc = Ac * EC / L = 9685.84 * (20 *103)/1000
= 193716.8 N/mm
Ks = As * Es / L = 314.16 * (200 *103)/1000
= 62832N/mm

100 kN

C S

(Kc + Ks) * 1 = 100*10 3

( 193716.8 + 62832 ) = 100*10 3
= 0.38978 mm

Force:
Fc = Kc * = 193716.8 0.38978 = 75508.75
Fs = Ks * = 62832 0.38978 = 24491.25
Both forces are compressive
Stress:
C = Fc / Ac = 75508.75 / 9685.84 = 7.795 N/mm2 (C)
S = Fs / As = 24491.25 / 314.16 = 77.95 N/mm2 (C)
Case 2: Temperature increases by 200 C

= 200 C

Consider the bar to be restrained, the force induced is F1

F1 = (KC * c + KS * S) * L
= (193716.8 * 15*10 -6 + 62832 * 5*10 -6) * 200 * 1000
= 643982.4 N

Now,
(KC + KS) * 1 = F1
1 = F1 / (KC + KS) = 643982.4 / (193716.8 + 62832)
= 2.51017 mm

Forces
FC1 = (c * * L 1 ) KC = (15*10 -6 * 200*1000 2.51017) 193716.8
= 94887.32N
FS1= (S * * L 1 ) KS = (5*10 -6 * 200*1000 2.51017) 62832
= 94887.32N

Stress:
C1 = FC1 / Ac = 94887.32 / 9685.84 = 9.976N/mm2 (C)
S1 = FS1/As = 94887.32 / 314.16 = 302.03 N/mm2 (T)

Final Deflection = 1 = 2.510 0.389 = 2.121 mm

Final Stress:
C1F = C1 + C = 9.976 + 7.795 = 17.771 N/mm2 (C)
S1F = S1 + C = 302.03 + 77.95 = -224.08 N/mm2 (T)
------ P.T.O.
Case 3: Temperature decreases by 200C

= 200 C
Forces shall be same as the previous case but in the opposite direction.
Forces
FC2 = 94887.32N (T)
FS2 = 94887.32N (C)

Stress:
C2 = FC2 / Ac = 94887.32 / 9685.84 = 9.976N/mm2
S2 = FS2 /As = 94887.32 / 314.16 = 302.03 N/mm2

Final Stress:
C1F = C2 + C = 9.976 + 7.795 = 1.821 N/mm2 (T)
This is tensile stress and it is given that concrete cannot take tension. So
concrete will crack and the entire external load will be carried by steel.
S2F = 100103/ 314.16 = 318.31 N/mm2
