Frame Releases and Partial Fixity

This document describes how to assign releases and partial fixity to frame objects in ETABS. Any of the six degrees of freedom (three translations and three rotations) can be released at either end of a frame. Partial fixity is specified by assigning a spring stiffness. Certain combinations of releases are considered unstable and not permitted. The process involves selecting the frame, choosing the releases/partial fixity in the assignment form, and applying the changes.

Form:FrameAssignmentRelease/PartialFixity

Anyofthethreetranslationalandthreerotationaldegreesoffreedomcanbereleasedateitherendofaframeobject.
However,thereleasesaremeaningfulonlyifaframesectionpropertyhasbeenassignedtotheframeobject.Itis
possibletospecifypartialfixityattheendsoftheframeobject.Thisisaccomplishedbyspecifyingaspringstiffness
whenthememberendreleaseisassignedasdescribedherein.

Thereleasesarealwaysspecifiedintheframeobject(framesection)gridsystem.Endreleasesarealwaysassumed
tooccuratthesupportfaces,thatis,attheinsideendoftheendoffset.

1.Selecttheframeobject(s)towhichendreleasesorpartialfixityaretobeassigned.

2.ClicktheAssignmenu>Frame>ReleasesandPartialFixitycommandtoopentheFrameAssignment
Release/PartialFixityform.

3.OntheFrameAssignmentRelease/PartialFixityform:

Specifytherequiredendreleasesbycheckingtheappropriatecheckboxes.

Alternatively,specifypartialfixitybyenteringaspringstiffnessvaluefortheframepartialfixitysprings.

Toremoveallofthecurrentlyspecifiedendreleasesfromaselectedmember,includingpartialfixity,
checktheNoReleasescheckboxatthebottomoftheform.

4.ClicktheApplybutton.Anypreviouslyassignedendreleaseorpartialfixitywillbereplacedbythisassignment.

WhentheApplybuttonisused,theFrameAssignmentRelease/PartialFixityformwillremainopenuntilit
isclosedbyclickingtheClosebutton.Thisallowsselectionofanotherframeobject(s),towhichadifferent
assignmentscanbemade.

Ifonlyoneassignmentisbeingmadetoonlyonesetofselectedobjects,theOKbuttoncanbeusedtoboth
applytheassignmentandclosetheform.

UnstableEndReleases

Anycombinationofendreleasesmaybespecifiedforaframeelementprovidedthattheelementremainsstable.This
ensuresthatallloadappliedtotheelementistransferredtotherestofthestructure.Thefollowingsetsofreleasesare
unstable,eitheraloneorincombination,andarenotpermitted.

ReleasingU1(axial)atbothends.

ReleasingU2(shearforce2,major)atbothends.

ReleasingU3(shearforce3,minor)atbothends.

ReleasingR1(torsion)atbothends.

ReleasingR2(moment22,minor)atbothendsandU3(shearforce3,minor)ateitherend.

ReleasingR3(moment33,major)atbothendsandU2(shearforce3,major)ateitherend.
