1. A circuit's resistance is 76.8 ohms when connected to a 1.5 volt battery. Find the current.

Solution:

I=V/R

I = 1.5V / 76.8

I = 0.0195312 A

I = 0.020 A

I = 20 mA

2. Find the power consumed when 3.75 amps flows through a hair dryer plugged into 120 volts.

Solution:

P=IV

P = ( 120 V ) ( 3.75 A )

P = 450 W

3. A circuit's resistance is 520 ohms. Find the power being used when the current is 2.8 amps.

Solution:

V = I R and P = V I

V = ( 2.8 A ) ( 520 )

V = 1456 v

P = ( 1456 v ) ( 2.8 A )

P = 4076.8 W

P = 4.1 x 10 3 W

P = 4.1 kW

4. A 1.50 kilowatt hair dryer is turned on for 180 seconds. Find the energy used in Joules.

Solution:
e=Pt

P = 1.50 kW = 1.50 x 10 3 W = 1.50 x 10 3 J / s

e = ( 1.50 x 10 3 J / s ) ( 180 s )

e = 2.70 x 10 5 J

e = 270 kJ

5. A stereo uses 180 watts for 1 hours. Find the energy used in kilowatt hours.

Solution:

P = 180 W
t = 1.5 h
e=?

e=Pt

P = 0.180 x 10 3 W

P = 0.180 kW

e = ( 0.180 kW ) ( 1.5 h )

e = 0.27 kWh

6. A computer draws a current of 1.4 amps and has a resistance of 85 ohms.

Find the cost to run it for 1.5 hours if it is 8.3 cents per kilowatt hour.

Solution:

I = 1.4 A
R = 85 ohms
t = 1.5 h
billing rate = 8.3 cents / kWh

V = I R and P = V I and e = P t and cost = e . billing rate

V = ( 1.4 A ) ( 85 ohms )
V = 119 v

P = ( 119 v ) ( 1.4 A )
P = 166.6 W = 0.1666 x 10 3 W = 0.1666 kW

e = ( 0.1666 kW ) ( 1.5 h )
e = 0.2499 kWh
cost = ( 0.2499 kWh ) ( 8.3 cents / kWh )
cost = 2.07417 cents
cost = 2.1 cents

7. A positively charged dielectric has a charge of 2 coulombs. If 12.5x1018 electrons are added to it,
what will be the net charge on the said dielecric?

Solution:

Q1 = +2C

Q2 = -12.5x1018 * 1/6.25x1018

Qnet = Q1 + Q2 = 2+(-2)

Qnet = 0

8. A battery can deliver 10 joules of energy to move 5 coulombs of charge. What is the potential
difference between the terminals of the battery?

Solution:

E= W/Q

E=10/5

E=2 V

9. A cloud of 2.5x1019 electrons move past a given point every 2 seconds. How much is the
intensity of the electron flow?

Solution:

Q= 2.5x1019 C x [1C/6.25x1018]

Q= 4C

I=Q/t = 4/2

I=2A

10. The current in an electric lamp is 5A. What quantity of electricity flows towards the filament in 6
minutes?

Soln:

Q=It = 5(6min x 60sec/1 min)

Q= 1800C
11. A constant current of 4A charges a capactor. How long will it take to accumulate a total charge
of 8 coulombs in the plates?

Soln:

t = Q/I = 8/4

t = 2 sec

12. The substation bus bar is made up of 2 inches round copper bars 20ft. long. What is the
resistance of each bar if resistivity is 1.724x10-6 -cm?

Soln:

A = d2/4 = ((2inch x 2.54cm/1 inch)2)/4 = 20.268 cm2

L = 20ft x 12in/1ft x2.54cm/1 inch = 609.6 cm
