Slope Stability and Handling of Landslide Analysis Using Plaxis V.8.2 Finite Element Method

The document describes a landslide that occurred along a roadway in Lampung, Indonesia, covering part of the road. Slope stability analysis was conducted using the Plaxis finite element method to determine safety factors under different groundwater conditions and evaluate potential stabilization approaches. The analysis found that partially saturated conditions produced the lowest stability. Initial analysis before stabilization yielded a safety factor of 0.2847. After applying stabilization measures, the safety factor increased to 1.3548, indicating improved slope stability. Soil parameters such as cohesion, friction angle, and groundwater levels significantly impact slope stability.

ABSTRACT

SLOPE STABILITY AND HANDLING OF LANDSLIDE ANALYSIS

USING PLAXIS V.8.2 FINITE ELEMENT METHOD
(Case Study : Liwa - Simpang Gunung Kemala Roadway STA.263+650)

by

GIWA WIBAWA PERMANA

The downpour in most of Taman Nasional Bukit Barisan Selatan (TNBBS) Lampung
areas caused landslide on a cliff in Liwa Simpang Gunung Kemala STA.263+650
roadside so that a part of the roadside covered by the landslide. For this case, it takes
slope stability analysis to determine safety factors of the slope in research site that can
figuring accordance with the real conditions on the field in order to enable the
approaches condition on the result of analysis and to simplify the process of figuring the
handling, one of them is through the using of manual formulas and Plaxis program.

This analysis uses soil parameters input data, those are: cohesion, c; soil friction angle,
; slope angle, ; and soil volume weight, . In element to PLAXIS method analyzing,
beside of the parameters, it also need modulus of elasticity, E; permeability coefficient, k;
and poisson ratio, . The determination of safety data rate are varied by 3 ground water
level conditions on the slope, those are saturated soil condition, partially saturated soil
condition (Hsaturated = 7 m and Hdry= 3 m) and fully saturated soil condition.

The result of this research shows that soil parameters greatly affect the stability of slope.
Partially saturated slope condition has the smallest stability compared to other
conditions. Based on the analysis conducted before handling condition, it is acquired the
deformed mesh = 885x10-3 m; active pore pressures = -168.89 m; effective stress = -
535.76 kN / m; safety factor = 0.2847. On the condition after handling, it is obtained
values of deformed mesh = 818x10-3 m; active pore pressures = -132.36 m; effective
stress = -209.77 kN / m; safety factor = 1.3548.
