Human Computer Interaction: Lecture 1. Usability

The document discusses the importance of usability in human computer interaction. It defines usability as how well users can use a system's functionality and how good the system is based on learnability, efficiency, visibility, errors, and satisfaction. A user interface is the means by which software presents itself and interacts with users. It strongly affects perceptions of software and unusable interfaces are abandoned, costing time and potentially causing disasters. Designing good user interfaces is challenging because designers must consider how users, not other programmers, will interact with and understand the system.

HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

LECTURE 1. USABILITY

USABILITY
-Usability is about creating effective user interfaces.

USER INTERFACE
-is the means by which software presents itself to the world
-the part of the computer that interacts with the person (using input-output)

Importance of User Interface

-UI strongly affects perception of software
-Usable software sells better
-Unusable websites are abandoned
-Perception is sometimes superficial
-An attractive user interface may seem user friendly even if it is not really usable
-Users blame themselves for UI failings
-People who make buying decisions are not always end users

Results of a Bad Interface

-Users time isnt getting any cheaper
-Disasters can happen

Why Is It Hard To Design UI?

-You are not the user
-software engineering is about communicating with other programmers
-UI is about communicating with users
-The user is always right

USABILITY DEFINITION
-how well users can use the systems functionality
-how good the system is
Dimensions of Usability
-Learnability-is it easy to learn?
-Efficiency-once learned, is it fast to use?
-Visibility-is the state of the system visible?
-Errors-are errors few and recoverable?
-Satisfaction-is it enjoyable to use?
