A Theology of Cities

God designed cities to draw out human creativity and culture. As more people live in cities, it is important for the church to understand how to minister in an urban context. There are three reasons why cities develop culture: 1) Cities provide refuge and safety by concentrating resources and people. 2) The density and diversity of cities magnifies both good and bad in human nature, accelerating cultural and intellectual progress but also potential for conflict. 3) God instructed Adam and Eve to build civilizations and cities, as the culmination of redemption is depicted as a city in Revelation.
