Data Collection Methods

The document discusses three data collection methods that will be used in a research study: focus groups with students, interviews with professors at the beginning of the study, and stimulated recall interviews with professors. Focus groups will be used to understand students' perceptions of second language instruction in their subject matters by discussing specific questions in groups. Interviews will explore professors' views of the phenomenon and inform them about the study. Stimulated recall interviews will have professors recall and explain their thinking based on videos or recordings of their own performances.

6 DATA COLLECTION METHODS

One of the methods that researchers are going to implement is focus group in the sense to

answer the first research question which is what can be observed on a second language

instruction in contend subject matters at state university in Pereira?. Even though the

question is based on students perceptions, this method according to Krueguer (2008) cited

by Meriam (2009) is an interview with a group of people who knowledge of the topic at

issue, it is a constructivist perspective because the data is constructed through social

interaction. But here the main goal is to obtain students responses towards the phenomenon,

so in this sense participants are going to be grouped in order to discuss about specific

questions researchers ask them regarding the implementation of contend subject matters in

English.

The second question of the present research study has to do with professors perceptions

towards the integration of second language instruction in contend subject matters at state

university in Pereira which is going to be answered by interviews at the beginning of the

study. According to DeMarrais (2004) cited by Meriam (2009) defines an interview as a

process in which a researcher and participant engage in a conversation focused on questions

related to a research study (p. 55). Researchers will take advantage of the interviews at

the outset of the study to see what professors think about of the phenomenon, but also to

show them what the research study is about.

Finally it is placed the stimulated recall method which is also for professors only. As Lyle

(2002) states, it is an introspective research procedures through which cognitive processes can be

investigated by inviting subjects to recall when prompted by a video recordings sequence, their

concurrent thinking during that event. Following this conception professors will be answering

background questions based on external stimulating elements that can be auditory, visual or
audiovisual (i.e. videos, video recordings, recordings or pictures) based on their

performances.
