Introduction
This(unofficial)manualprovidesabasicintroductionintotheuseoftheMCDU(MultipurposeControland
DisplayUnit)oftheJARDesigna320XPlaneflightsimulatorplugin.MCDUrepresentsthemajordevice
withwhichthepilotinteractswiththeFMGC(FlightManagementandGuidanceComputer).Intheflight
simulatorworldthesetermsareoftenusedinterchangeably.SometimesyoumayalsohearthetermFMC
whichmeansFlightManagementComputer.Thisisinfactthesame(orsimilar)deviceastheFMGCbut
fromBoeing.
HavingprovidedthemostbasicintroductionImnowgoingtoskipanydescriptionsofabbreviationsasthis
impairsthereadabilityofthetext.Pleasehavealookatthe Abbreviations sectioninordertoclarifythe
abbreviationsusedinthisdocument.

TheFMGCisquiteacomplexsystemwhichinterfaceswithmanyotheraircraftsystems.Thefollowing

SimplifiedSystemOverview
TheFCUisashortterminterfacewhichallowsthepilottoselecttheengagementoftheAP,FDand
A/THR.Italsoallowstheselectionoftheguidancemode(managedorguided)andmanualflight
parameters.
TheMCDUisthelongterminterfacebetweenthepilotsandtheFMGC.Itallowsthepilottodoalltheflight
routeplanning,performancecalculation,fuelconsumptionandmuchmore.
TheThrustLeversallowthepilottoselectthethrustifA/THRisdeselectedorthethrustratingsincase
A/THRisselected.TheThrustLeversdataisfedintotheFADECwhichisacomputercontrollingand
steeringtheengines(thisisthecomputerwhichmadetheflightengineerobsolete).
TheDisplays(togetherwiththeEFIS)arethevisualinterfacewhichdisplaydatafromtheFMGCtothe
pilots.
FinallytheheartofthesystemistheFMGCitself.Thisistheactualcomputerdoingalltheprocessing,
control,inputandoutput,etc.
OverviewofMCDU
TheMCDUisthedevicewithwhichthepilotinteractswiththeFMGC.Comparedtomoderndisplayand
dataentrydevices,theFMGClooksquiteoldfashionedanditsusecanbedescribedasquitequirky,
especiallyforsomeoneunfamiliarwiththesekindsofdevices.
TheMCDUisbasicallyadevicewithasmalldisplayatthetop.Oneachsideofthescreentherearesixline
selectkeys(16Rand16L)whichallowthepilottoselectacertainlineonthescreen.Belowthescreen
therearesetofpagekeys.Theyareusedinordertoselectthedifferentpages(functions)ofthe
MCDU/FMGC.Furtherbelowaretheslewkeys(arrows)andthealphanumerickeysusedtowritestuffinto
thescratchpadfieldwhichisactuallythelastlineofthedisplay.
InordertoenterdataintotheMCDUthefollowingstepsareperformed:

Iwasnotabletodeterminetheproperruleforinterceptingtheroute.Therearehoweverthreewaysonhow
tointercepttheroute.
1. WhendisengagingHDGmode,theA/Cwillflybacktotherouteandinterceptedtherouteproperly
withoutanyintervention.Imnotsureifthisthedefaultbehaviororifthisonlyhappenswhensome
parameters(likebeingcloseenoughtoawaypoint,etc.)aregiven.
2. Amoremanualmethodistoflyatrackbacktoalegofyourrouteandbeforeintercepting,
disengagetheHDGmode.ThiswillcauseaswitchbacktoNAVmodeandfollowingtheflightplan.
3. ProbablytheeasiestandsafestmethodhoweveristomakeuseoftheDirectTofeaturewithinthe
DIRpageinordertoselectawaypointinfrontofyou.ThiswillflytheA/Cdirectlytothiswaypoint
andfromthencontinuefollowingtheroute.OfcoursethisrequiresNAVmodebeingengaged.
