Curriculum:
Eighth grade uses the Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards to guide our curriculum.
Resources we use in this curriculum include the Prentice Hall literature book, in-class novels, and
many resources available online. Students are also required to have an independent reading

The syllabus is subject to change. If there is a change in the syllabus, I will notify the students.
book with them at all times. This independent reading book is to be brought to class every day, as
it is what the students will be reading when they finish other classwork.

Grading:
Honors
70% Tests/Projects
30% Practice (Homework, Classwork, and Quizzes)

General
60% Tests/Projects
40% Practice (Homework, Classwork, and Quizzes)

Tests and Projects:

Students will have a vocabulary test on words relating to the literature we read and concepts we
learn every Friday. On weeks when we are out of school on Monday, we will not have a vocabulary
test. Test dates and project due dates will vary. The dates of all tests/projects will be given to
students at least five days in advance.

Bonus Points:
Per Superintendant Sewell, teachers may no longer offer bonus points for Box Tops or supplies.
The only types of bonus points or extra credit I offer are for answering bonus test questions or
doing an extra credit project as the opportunity arises.

Absences:
Please refer to the Houston County Schools 2015-2016 Handbook for information what constitutes
an excused/unexcused absence and the number of absences a student is allowed. Keep the
following in mind though: several studies show that high attendance is linked to higher grades.

procedures to follow in case of an absence:

It is the students responsibility to get their makeup work. Students should have two or
three homework buddies they can use to get homework assignments or notes. If the
student has a question about the work they missed, they may ask me questions whenever I
am not in front of the class.
Handouts and worksheets from the previous day will be located in a hanging file with the
students name on it. They are to complete whatever work they owe within 7 days (including
weekend) of their return. After that, they will have to make up work in Saturday School
(general classes only) or receive a failing grade on that assignment. Tests are to be
scheduled and made up within those 7 days as well.
