EX03. 2D Static Analysis of Rectangular Plate With Hole

The document provides step-by-step instructions for using ANSYS to analyze a rectangular steel plate with a hole that is subjected to a tensile load, including how to define the geometry, apply material properties, mesh the model, apply boundary conditions and loads, solve for von-Mises stresses and deflection, and post-process the results.

2D Static Analysis of Rectangular Plate with Hole

Problem: The rectangular plate made of steel as shown figure below is subjected to a tensile load of 800
6 2
lb. The material properties are E = 29x10 Ib/in , = 0.3. Thickness of the plate is 0.3. Analyze for the
von-mises stresses and maximum deflection of the plate using ANSYS.

GUI Solution:

1. Starting: Click start ANSYS ANSYS product launcher: Launch ANSYS

Multiphysics File management browse the directory for saving and retrieving the files.
Click run

2. Preferences: tick structural select h-method ok

3. Title: Utility menu File Change title Plate with hole ok.
Utility menu plot replot

4. Elements: Main menu Preprocessor element type add add structural solid quad 8node183
options select plane stress with thickness close

5. Real constants: Main menu Preprocessor real constant add ok enter the thickness as 0.3.

6. Material Properties: Main menu Preprocessor material prop material models structural linear
elastic isotropic enter EX = 29e6 & PRXY = 0.3 ok
7. Modeling: Main menu Preprocessor Modeling create keypoints in active CS enter keypoint
number and its location (x,y,z coord) as KP1 0,0; KP2 7,0 ; KP3 7,5; KP40,5ok

Main menu Preprocessor Modeling create lines straight lines by mouse, select keypoints
1 & 2; 2 & 3; 3 & 4; 4 & 1 ok

Main menu Preprocessor Modeling create keypoints in active CS enter KP numbers and
its location (x,y,z coord) as KP5 1,2; KP6 5,2; KP7 5,3; KP8 1,3 ok.
