Critical Path by Total Float Is Wrong in Multiple Calendar Project

The document discusses that using total float to determine the critical path in projects with multiple calendars can result in an incorrect critical path identification. It provides an example where changing the calendar of one activity shifts that activity onto the perceived critical path when using total float, but the longest path method still correctly identifies the actual critical path. The document recommends using the longest path option rather than total float for determining the critical path when a project has multiple calendars defined for its activities.

Critical path by Total Float is wrong in multiple calendar project

In Primavera we can define Critical activities by 2 option:

There are many reasons why we should choose Longest Path instead of Total Float.
One of the reason is that when our project has multiple calendar.

We have 4 activities which have same calendar: Standard 5 day workweek. We use Total Float to
calculate Critical path. The result is this:
Critical path by Total Float is wrong in multiple calendar project

When I change A1020 activitys calendar to 1 Day Workweek. We use Total Float to calculate
Critical path. The result is this:

You can see its the wrong critical path.

Now when you choose longest path option. It will become like this:
Critical path by Total Float is wrong in multiple calendar project

Now the critical path is better

So when you have multiple calendar project, consider to use longest path option.
