Chapter 1: Project Background

This document provides background information on a project to design and construct the foundation for a 5-story commercial building in Sta. Clara, Batangas, Philippines. The objectives are to analyze the soil's bearing capacity, design a foundation that can stabilize the structure and withstand loads based on codes and standards, and provide an efficient and economical design. The project will focus on designing and building the foundation, analyzing the soil's capacity, and comparing design options based on cost. Limitations include working with the local soil types and using limited resources.

CHAPTER 1: PROJECT BACKGROUND

1.1 The Project

There are many structures around the world. We can see different sizes and designs, but we cant see the
part where the whole structure is depending to withstand the different lateral forces like wind, seismic and
even dead and live loads. Its the foundation of a structure. One of the most important considerations in
ensuring the long life and safety of a building is the foundation it rests upon. Foundation is the element of
an architectural structure which connects it to the ground, and transfer loads from the structure to the
ground.

Foundation engineering applies the knowledge of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, geology, and structural
engineering to the design and construction of foundations for buildings and other structures. The most
basic aspect of foundation engineering deals with the selection of the type of foundation, such as using a
shallow or deep foundation system. Another important aspect of foundation engineering involves the
development of design parameters, such as the bearing capacity of the foundation.

In constructing the foundation, the soil type and its safe bearing capacity (SBC) is to be considered.
The soil type indicates if the soil is prone to settlement and uplift, and the SBC gives the load bearing
capacity of the soil. A soil investigation prior to construction gives the requisite characteristics of the
soil, particularly about the depths of the different layers of soil, called soil profile, by drilling bore holes
in the site at suitable intervals. If the soil close to the surface is capable of supporting structural loads,
then shallow foundations are used, else deep foundations need to be adopted for the structure. The
soil type also gives the depth of the water table. The data from the soil investigation gives enough
bases for the selection of the foundation type.

Stated in the National Building Code of the Philippines (PD1096) in section 1202 c.1. Footings and
foundations shall be of the appropriate type, of adequate size, and capacity in order to safely sustain the
superimposed loads under seismic or any condition of external forces that may affect the safety or stability
of the structure. It shall be the responsibility of the architect and/or engineer to adopt the type and design of
the same in accordance with the standards set forth by the Secretary. An improperly designed or deficient
foundation could lead to dangerous structural failure of the building, negative impact on adjacent structures,
and costly and constant repairs. The role of foundation design is to make sure that the structure, its
inhabitants, and its surroundings are safe.
The aim of this project is to design and construct an effective foundation for a 5-storey commercial building
in Sta. Clara, Batangas. The result will be safe recommendations for the foundation.

1.2 Project Objectives

Upon the completion of the project the designers aim to accomplish the following general and specific
objectives:

General Objectives
To design and construct foundation of a 5-Storey commercial building that can stabilize the
structure from the soft soil in Sta. Clara, Batangas.

Specific Objectives
To analyze the bearing capacity of the soil from the load that is given by the foundation.
To design a foundation that withstands the soil bearing capacity in accordance with codes and
engineering standards.
To provide an efficient design that is also economical in the long run
To weigh-in the trade-offs based on the limitations in order to differentiate what is more effective
design choice.
1.3 Clients

The clients of this project are small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This also serves as a job opportunity
for the residents of Sta. Clara, Batangas.

1.4 Project Scope and Limitation

Project Scope

The following were the scope covered by the design project:

The project will focus on design and construction of foundation in the said location.
To analyze the soil bearing capacity of the area and design the most economical foundation based
on the given tradeoffs.
As for the tradeoffs, the comparison that the designer considered in economic criteria was the cost
estimate of the materials.
The project will be designed in accordance to the standards of the National Structural Code of the
Philippines (NSCP) and National Building Code of the Philippines (PD1096).

Project Limitations

The following were the limitations of the design project:

The project is only for the soil types in Sta. Clara, Batangas.
The design that will be use on the foundation will come from the designs of foundation in
geotechnical engineering.
The funds needed for the undertaking of the project.
This project will be done using references from limited resources.
1.5 Project Development

The project started by identifying the problem, as soon as the problem has been identified, the designers
will gather data and information relevant to the project. Based on the gathered data, the designers will
conceptualize variety of effective solution to the problem. To classify the trade-off strategies, the designer
will specify different constraints. Then, structural analysis of the trade-offs will be done in accordance with
the codes and standards of engineering practices, thus the best trade-off complied will be the final design
of the structure.
