Assignment #1

This document contains two problems from a dynamics assignment. Problem 1 asks the student to determine the lateral spring stiffness, damping ratio, and damping coefficient of a building set into free vibration based on its weight, initial displacement, maximum return displacement and time. Problem 2 asks the student to determine the displacement and velocity at a given time of a mass-spring-damper system with given mass, stiffness, initial conditions, and damping coefficient, with and without damping. The problems are from the textbook "Dynamics of Structures" by Clough and Penzien and are due on July 1st with points deducted for late submission.

Dynamics Assignment #1

Date of Submission: July 01, 2017

Maximum Score: 10
Reference: Dynamics of Structures by R.W. Clough and J. Penzien, Second Edition
Note: 2 points/day will be subtracted to the score when the assignment is submitted after
the due date.

Problem 1.1
The weight W of the building is 200 kips and the building is set into free vibration by releasing it
(at time t = 0) from a displacement of 1.20 in. If the maximum displacement on the return swing
is 0.86 in. at time t = 0.64 sec, determine:

(a) the lateral spring stiffness k

(b) the damping ratio
(c) the damping coefficient c

c
k/2 k/2

Problem 1.2
Assume that the mass and stiffness of the structure of figure below are as follows: m = 2 kips-
sec2/in., k = 40 kips/in. If the system is set into free vibration with the initial conditions (0) =
0.7 in. and (0) = 5.6 in./sec, determine the displacement and velocity at t = 1.0 sec, assuming:

(a) c = 0 (undamped system)

(b) c = 2.8 kips-sec/in.
