Unit 3: DESIGN OF TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT JOINTS
TORSION
PART A
1. Differentiate with a neat sketch the fillet welds subjected to parallel loading and
transverse loading. (APR 2011)
10. Write any two advantages and disadvantages of welded joints over riveted joints.
(MAY/JUNE 2013)
Material is saved in welded joints and hence the machine element will be light if welded joints
are used instead of riveted joints. Leak proof joints can easily obtained by welded joints
compared riveted joints
1. A plate 75 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick is joined with another plate by a single
transverse weld and a double parallel fillet weld as shown in Fig. the maximum tensile and
shear stresses are 70 MPa and 56 MPa respectively. Find the length of each parallel fillet
weld, if the joint is subjected to both static and fatigue loading. (APR/MAY 2008)
(NOV/DEC 2004)
(NOV/DEC 2006/2007)
12. Two lengths of mild steel tie rod having width 200 mm are to be connected by means of
Lozenge joint with two cover plates to withstand a tensile load of 180 kN. Completely
design the joint, if the permissible stresses are 80 MPa in tension; 65 MPa in shear and 160
MPa in crushing. Draw a neat sketch of the joint. (MAY/JUNE 2012)
13. Design a knuckle joint to connect two mild steel bars under a tensile load of 25 kN. The
allowable stresses are 65 MPa in tension, 50 MPa in shear and 83 MPa in crushing.
(MAY/JUNE 2012)
14. What is an eccentric loaded welded joint? Describe procedure for designing such a
joint. (MAY/JUNE 2013)
