Experiment:: BY: Francisco Javier Huerta Rivera Amalia O Reboredo Arroyo Eduardo Valdez Vázquez

The document describes an experiment to demonstrate combustion with and without air. The experiment involves lighting a candle placed in a dish of water and then quickly inverting a glass over the candle and dish. When the glass is placed, the candle flame heats the trapped air, causing it to expand and pushing the water up into the glass. Eventually, the flame goes out due to lack of oxygen as carbon dioxide builds up. The conclusion is that for combustion to continue, oxygen is required as a fuel source. Removing the oxygen source by trapping it causes the flame to extinguish.

EXPERIMENT:

THERE IS AIR OR
THERE IS NOT
BY:
FRANCISCO JAVIER HUERTA RIVERA

EDUARDO VALDEZ VZQUEZ
INTRODUCTION
The atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the weight of air in
the atmosphere of Earth, The standard atmosphere (symbol: atm) is a unit of
pressure defined as 101325 Pa. If we heat a closed container, It will crease
temperature and pressure, but this only occur when we have a constant volume.

The experiment that will be presented refers to combustion when there is or is no

air.Remember that for there to be combustion there must be oxygen as the oxygen.
For example if in a room was burning and suddenly there was no more oxygen, the
fire would only be extinguished, because the atoms in the fuel are mixed with
oxygen.
MATERIALS

Candle

Crystal glass :

Fire
STEPS

1. First, you put the dish on a table horizontally.

2. Then, you paste the candle on the dish with the wax.
(if you dont paste well the candle on the dish, It would fall)
(if the candle is short, the flame candle will goes out very fast)
3. Next, you fill the dish with water to a quarter of it.
4. After that, you light the candle.
(You must wait that the flame is ready)
5. Finally, you cover the candle with the inverted crystal glass.
(You must look at this experiment in detail)

The candle flame heats the air in the crystal glass, and this hot air expands. When
the flame goes out, the cool air in the crystal glass down up and the air and the water
go up in the crystal glass because the pressure in the crystal glass is lower that the
atmospheric pressure.
The flame goes out because while the flame light this produce Carbone Dioxide and
causes that the oxygen lower, accordingly the flame lack oxygen and it goes out.

Conclusion

For that candle is lit it is necessary three factors a spark, oxygen and fuel (candle),
then when is starts to cover the began to fill with carbon monoxide and the oxygen
is going down, meanwhile in the glass temperature begins to rise and so the
pressure therefore begins to function as a pacifier until candle goes out.
