Jonathan Cranfield received his BA with First Class Honors in English and American Literature and Film Studies from the University of Kent in 2006. He went on to earn his MA with Distinction in English and American Literature from the same institution in 2007. His research focuses on Victorian periodicals, science, and Arthur Conan Doyle. He has taught undergraduate courses on poetry, Romantic literature, Victorian literature, and critical theory and has presented papers at several conferences. Acadmic Profile
My research, which is funded by the University of Kent, focusses on Victorian periodicals, Victorian
science and the work of Arthur Conan Doyle. I always look to supplement my research with contemporary
philosophy and theory and pursue interdisciplinary interests in both Film and Cultural Studies. I am also co-
editor of Inscription, the University of Kent Literature Studies Journal.

Experience
In two years of teaching experience I have taught courses on the history and theory of poetry, Romantic
literature, Victorian literature and critical theory. I have delivered undergraduate lectures on the work of
Thomas De Quincey as well on degenerative science and Victorian literature. My thesis examined the role
of science in the Sherlock Holmes stories and The Strand Magazine; I am applying for postdoctoral funding
to re-write it as a monograph. It was supervised by Dr Vybarr Cregan-Reid, Dr Charlotte Sleigh (2008-) and
Prof. Rod Edmond (2007-2008).
