Message From Presidente Dayton: 11 de Junio de 2017
Let me give you some good examples. We talk a great deal about Dignified
Language and some might feel that we are being too strict. However, in Ephesians
4:29 we read, Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that
which is good to the use of edifying that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Similarly, in D&C 52:16 it says, He that speaketh, whose spirit is contrite, whose
language is meek and edifieth, the same is of God if he obey mine ordinances. For
Dress and Grooming Standards we read, Thou shalt not be proud in thy heart; let all
thy garments be plain, and.let all things be done in cleanliness before me. Some
missionaries struggle with the Time Schedule but the scripture in Ecclesiastes 3:1 states,
To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven.
With regards to Entertainment , we only listen to music or audio recordings that invite
the Spirit and help us focus on the work and directs our thoughts and feelings to the
Savior. We dont use unauthorized electronic or video equipment and are not
authorized to use a personal computer unless it involves writing home, a letter to the
mission president, or for proselyting purposes. We dont read books, magazines, and
other material that is not authorized by the Church. The reason for the above is found
in D&C 4:2, 5 which states, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve
him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before
God at the last dayAnd faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory
of God, qualify him for the work. In other words, to be able to have an eye single to
the glory of God we need to avoid all forms of worldly entertainment.
One of the cardinal rules of the mission is that we never leave Our Companions. In D&C
42:6, we are counseled, Ye shall go forth in the power of my Spirit preaching my
gospel, two by two, in my name, lifting up your voices as with the sound of a trump,
declaring my word like unto angels of God. The Lord established this pattern of going
out two by two long ago and the pattern has not changed. Companions are to
support each other and strengthen each other. They provide protection from
temptation, false charges, and danger of many kinds. With regards to Finances, the
money we receive from the mission is a sacred fund and we are told to budget it, be
thrifty and wise in how we spend it. We are admonished to limit how often we eat at
restaurants including fast food restaurants. With regards to Morning Exercise, the
scriptures counsel us in I Corinthians 6:19, Know ye not that your body is the temple of
the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Having a vibrant, healthy body is crucial in missionary work in which so many demands
are made on your body. How can we possibly serve with all our heart, might, mind and
strength if we are sluggish, in poor condition, flabby and gaining too much weight?
Treating our body like a temple includes giving it adequate nutrition and adequate
exercise.
Finally, it is good to remember that our mission is organized according to the same
principles that govern other basic organizations in the Church. Regarding Missionary
Organization D&C 104:11 reminds us that, It is wisdom in me; therefore, a
commandment I give unto you, that ye shall organize yourselves and appoint every
man his stewardship. Assistants to the president, zone leaders, sister training leaders
and district leaders are to help strengthen, support and train you in your work. You are
assigned to a specific proselyting area by inspiration and represent the Lord in this area.
The Lord asks you to give an accounting of your stewardship in that area and thus we
are commanded to write a weekly letter to the mission president. Failure to write this
weekly letter or to give this accounting is a violation of missionary rules. In other words,
we dont write the letter for social reasons, only if we have time or occasionally and
casually. It is an accounting that we render to the Lord WEEKLY.
It is a blessing to have the Missionary Handbook to help us have our eye single to the
Lords glory as full-time missionaries. As we appreciate that it is scripturally based and
not capricious or arbitrary, it is easy to understand why our missionary policy (and this is
church-wide) is to read 3 pages of the White Handbook every day during
companionship study. When we fail to do that, we forget and the rules become vague,
we stop obeying them and our missionary work suffers. May we appreciate what a
wonderful resource the Missionary Handbook is and strive to be exactly obedient to its
rulesall of which are scripturally based.
In Alma 17 we read that the Sons of Mosiah were thorough in their teaching of the
Lamanites. As missionaries, we too can be thorough as we plan ,study and are prepared with
our lessons to thoroughly teach our investigators. Nephi was thorough in following the
instructions of the Lord in building the boat that carried his family to the promised land. We
too can be thorough in our missionary work as we study our scriptures and let the spirit direct
us in being prepared and ready to folllow promptings and instructions from the Lord.
This past week, I had the opportunity to see the apartment of the Hermans in Bilbao. Brother
and Sister Rohde explained to me that when they do a piso check, they ask the missionaries
to be prepared by having their apartment thoroughly cleaned. They meet with the
missionaries and if there is more cleaning to be done, they show them how to do it and then
come a few days later to recheck the apartment. During this visit they go room by room and
declutter itthrowing out or giving away anything they do not use. They even go closet by
closet and go through each clothing item and decide if it is useful or not. After the apartment
is throughly cleaned and decluttered, they call the owner of the piso and ask them to visit.
The owners ar usually so happy about how well maintained their apartment is that they are
willing to paint and complete repairs that need to be done. Becasue the Rohdes and
missionaries are thorough in their work, the missionaries are able to live in a nice environment
where the spirit of the Lord can dwell.
In the 80s I founded an image consulting firm to help people look their best. I often had the
opportunity to visit people in their homes and go through their closets. I was amazed at how
many clothing items hung in peoples closet (or were thrown on the floor) that had not been
worn for 10 years. I would always ask, have you worn this clothing item this year? If the
answer was, No, it was given away. When I left a home, all clothes were in stacksto give
away, to mend, to wash and iron and the remaining items were left on hangers. People always
told me how grateful they were to have fewer items hangingonly the clothing tems they
wear. When your home, closets and drawers are organized and decluttered it frees you to find
things quickly and to work through your day in an efficient and effective manner.
We can apply thoroughness to Missionary work in many ways- By throroughly planning our work
and then working our plan. By writing down in our Missionary daily planner our appointments
lists of people to call and commitments investigators have made as we Take 5 in leaving
appointments. We can be thorough in keeping the Area Book up to date, making sure all
paperwork is completed following a baptism and sent to Elder Hale. We can call Elder Morejon
about broken furniture, appliances and repairs that need to be done. We can thoroughly
examine our week each Sunday as we partake of the sacrament and commit to making
changes that would help us draw closer to the Savior and our Father in Heaven.
Completing tasks each day results in a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and the joy of
knowing we have pleased the Lord. We love you and are grateful for your faithful service and
all the work you do. We will continue to pray for you daily as you share the Gospel with the
good people of Spain.
