Meditation 5T

The document discusses urban renewal programs and some of their failures. It notes that many renewal projects fail because they propose relocating existing urban residents without properly adapting the design to their needs, behaviors, and occupations. Successful urban renewal requires detailed study of existing communities to understand urban issues in their current context. The document also discusses how architects and urban planners need to be adaptive and open to new concepts to better utilize public spaces. It suggests addressing an urban issue in one's local region for a thesis topic to gain a better understanding of local problems and behaviors.

Urban renewal is a program of land redevelopment in areas of moderate to high

density urban land use. Renewal has had both successes and failures. Many of the failures
include few from Dharavi in Mumbai. Why failures because a design proposed should adapt
to the conditions of the existing people in the urban fabric. It should never involve
relocation as if you propose relocation they resist. That is why most of the Urban renewal
are ending up as failures. Detailed study about their nature, behavioural patterns and
occupation helps in identifying urban issues in current context.

It's an interesting topic which covers a lot of issues on how spaces are being used, abused
and being neglected in our current scenario. This leads to rethinking at base and how
Architects & Urban planners needs to be adaptive and quick to new concepts which enables
better usage of public spaces.

Below image shows an example from Tarlaba (Istanbul,Turkey)

of how an urban space is redeveloped to suit a better living. Such concepts are working and
has to be tried in our context. We as Architects should be aware on how urban development
works. Working on it in thesis broadens your prospects hypothetically deriving innovative
solutions with constraints. When innovative solutions are proposed in thesis, it opens out
much more possibilities amidst the public. Hence I feel we do not take more of Urban
related design for our thesis.I suggest you to address an urban issue which persists in your
local region in which you will definitely have a better understanding about their problems
and their behaviour. If your design proposal is good, definitely you will raise funds to get
your design implemented. All the very best for your thesis.

Ahmedabad : Much like the Bahai Lotus temple in Delhi, Ahmedabad's
Riverfront, too, will soon have it's own iconic meditation centre perched right in
the midst of 15,000 trees spread over 10 hectares of land. This will be right
beside the Vasna reservoir water body. Whats more, almost four hectares will
be declared as a silent zone with no major construction or activity centres
coming up nearby. A proposal for this biodiversity park has been moved to the
state urban development department for finding partners for the project. There
will be special shelter for birds and even medium sized water bodies to attract
exotic birds. "The biodiversity park and the iconic meditation centre will be a
place for city dwellers to escape the humdrum of urban life and sit with their
families amidst nature," says a senior SRFDCL official.

CHANDIGARH: With an aim to provide much-needed relief to overstressed IT

professionals, UT administration is coming up with a state-of-the-art
meditation-cum-rejuvenation centre at Chandigarh Technology Park. Spread
over 12 killa land, the site would be developed as a natural forest with loads of
walking trails, water bodies, water cunnets, small bridges and other related
facilities.

Disclosing this to The Times of India, UT IT director Manjeet Singh Brar stated
that the proposed meditation centre would be developed by UT forest
department, which has already given its draft plan. "The basic objective
behind developing this meditation centre is providing some kind of a relief to
over-stressed IT professionals who are otherwise too caught up with their tight
schedules," said Brar.

Inquiries by TOI divulged that the park would be surrounded by picturesque

locales of forest land and would have a number of nature walk tracks for
health-conscious employees and their families. Besides water bodies, there
would be water cunnets and small bridges to lend an aesthetic look to the
spot, said Brar.

Brar disclosed that the place would have meditation huts where tired IT
professionals could sit quietly and relax for a while. "These huts would be
designed to provide isolation and tranquility to stressed-out professionals,"
said Brar.

While the place is being developed by UT forest department, it would have

eye-catching sites and facilities. "Once inside, people would forget all about
worldly worries of the outside and enjoy flora and fauna of the isolated spot,"

1. To design a dynamic and creative Urban Space,
2. Bring in a distinct imaginary which can be represented as an icon for the city in future,
3. A contextual and contemporary approach to the design,
5. To create mixed use spaces which can be used by young lads from slums to recite or
read. The aim is to create public spaces with features that enhance womens safety, and
detract from features that cause womens insecurity. While designing safe public spaces
for women, special focus would be on lighting, landscaping & visibility
