Generative Shape Design 1

This document provides instructions for using CATIA to design a part using generative shape design. It describes a 4 step process: 1) creating a wireframe geometry using splines and points, 2) generating basic surfaces using sweeps and revolves on the wireframe, 3) performing operations like trims and fillets to combine the surfaces, and 4) creating a solid part by joining the surfaces. It includes screenshots to demonstrate how to create splines, apply tangency conditions, perform sweeps, revolves, trims, symmetry operations and joins.

Design Process
1. Generating the
Wireframe

2. Generating basic
surfaces

3. Performing
operations :
Trim, Fillets and
Symmetry

4. Create solid part

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 3

Create the Wireframe Geometry
Enter the Generative Shape Design Workbench
Start menu: Shape -> Generative Shape Design
Create a Geometrical Set
Menu: Insert -> Geometrical Set

Current Geometrical Set

The next geometry created will
belong to it.

Use to create five points, type Coordinates

(0,0,9), (40,0,7.5)
(60,0,6), (80,0,5.8)
(90,0,5.8)

Double click an icon to

execute it repeatedly.

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 5

Create a Spline curve passing all five points.

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 6

Apply a tangency condition with the X axis at the Point.1.
Select Point.1 and click
Show Parameters`

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 7

Apply a tangency condition with the X axis at the Point.5
using the same method, and close the spline definition
dialog box.

Create points:(0,17,0), (20,20,0), (40,19,0), (60,18,0)

and (90,18,0)

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 8

Create a Spline curve passing these points, add
tangency condition with the X axis at the Point.10, the
last point.

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 9

Create a Combine curve from Spline.1 and Spline.2

Rename the combine curve to Guide Curve 1

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 10

Create points:(0,0,-3), (70,0,-4) and (90,0,-4)
Create a spline curve passing through these three points,
and add tangency condition with the X axis at the last
point.

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 11

Create a Combine curve from Spline.2 and Spline.3,
rename it Guide Curve 2

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 12

Create a Circle
center (70,0,0), on XY plane, R = 70mm, 135deg ~
180deg.

Create center point

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 13

Create a circle centered on the point (20,0,0), on XY
plane, R = 70mm, 0deg ~ 45deg.

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 14

Combine Spline.1 and Circle.1, name Guide Curve 3
Combine Spline.3 and Circle.1, name Guide Curve 4
Combine Spline.1 and Circle.2, name Guide Curve 5
Combine Spline.3 and Circle.2, name Guide Curve 6

Create a sketch in the YZ
plane, rename it Profile 1

Create another sketch in the

YZ plane, rename it Profile 2

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 16

Create a Line starting from the point (0,0,-300) and X
directed (any length, it will be used as an axis)

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 17

Create the Surfaces
Use Sweep to create a swept surface, using Profile 1

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 18

Create a swept surface, using Profile 2

Must be checked to position

the profile correctly

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 19

Create a swept surface on the other side, using Profile 2

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 20

Create an Extrude surface, using the Spline.3 as
profile, direction Y Axis, length = 25mm.

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 21

Create a Revolve surface using the Line.1 as axis
and the Spline.1 as profile

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 22

Perform Operations
Trim the Sweep.1 with the Revolute.1

Use these two buttons

to select correct sides

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 23

Trim the Trim.1 with the Extrude.1, generate Trim.2

Trim the Trim.2 with the Sweep.2, generate Trim.3

Trim the Trim.3 with the Sweep.3, generate Trim.4

Qiang FU MECH 412 CATIA Lab 24

Symmetry the Trim.4 (last trim) using the ZX plane
as reference.
